General Information
Each workshop will be held in the Agricultural and Natural Resources (ANR) building, room 124, from 9 AM – 12 PM.
Parking Information
There are multiple staff and commuter parking lots near the ANR, as well as bus service on “The T.” Check this map if you’re unfamiliar with the area.
The workshop is designed as an in-person workshop with hands-on exercises. However, if you feel unwell or cannot attend in person, you can follow along on Zoom.

Orientation to ISAAC-NG (Friday, Sep 6, 9 AM – 12 PM)
This workshop will cover how to efficiently use ISAAC-NG’s compute resources. We will cover how to access the cluster, use installed software, and submit jobs for computational research. Topics include, e.g.:
- Background and terminology on High Performance Computing (HPC)
- ISAAC compute resources and access
- Web-based access with Open OnDemand
- Data transfer with Globus
Introduction to the Linux Command Line (Friday, Oct 4, 9 AM – 12 PM)
This workshop will cover how to use a command-line environment to manage files and directories, and write scripts using text-based software. Topics include, e.g.:
- Background and terminology on Command Line Interfaces (CLI)
- Hands-on exercises with common CLI commands
- Best practices for working on a High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster
Writing Scripts and Submitting Jobs with Slurm (Friday, Nov 1, 9 AM – 12 PM)
This workshop will cover how to write batch scripts and submit compute jobs using the Slurm Workload Manager. Topics include, e.g.:
- Background and terminology on Slurm
- Introduction to writing scripts for reproducible research
- Hands-on exercises running scientific software with Slurm
- Best practices for scaling up compute-intensive research
