Request installation, management, and support for databases and database servers

The Database Administration service provides installation, management, and support for databases and database servers.

Database Administration can provide a variety of hosting services for Microsoft (MS) SQL Server, MySQL, and Oracle databases.

Features

Database Administration can provide the following support:

Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle

  • Installation of database software on a virtual or physical server (OIT or provided)
  • Setup of database on server and database configuration either per user specifications or install guide for vendor provided solutions
  • Database performance analysis and tuning as needed
  • Database monitoring as needed
  • Patching of database software
  • Upgrading of database software to new releases
  • Set up of backup scripts
  • Recovery/restore from backup support
  • Database troubleshooting
  • MS SQL hosted cluster database services with high availability and failover

MySQL*

  • Available for those with MySQL database exper­ience
  • Traditional hardware and operating system administration plus backups
  • Account management

* End‐user support for MySQL is not available. OIT is unable to assist with database design and development, application integration, debugging support, or support for general use of your MySQL database.

Knoxville Area, including UT Knoxville, UT System, Institute of Public Service, and Institute of Agriculture.

Faculty, staff, students, departments, and official campus organizations

MS SQL Server – university organizations can contact the OIT HelpDesk to request a database hosted on OIT’s clustered database servers for new or existing software installs.

Oracle – university organizations can request a database for software that requires an Oracle database or for the departments’ use.

Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle

System and database availability is determined by the application it supports or by SLA agreements.

E.g., maintenance schedules and up times are not the same across various database servers and systems.

MySQL

MySQL is available 24/7, except during scheduled and emergency maintenance. All efforts are made to perform maintenance on Wednesday night from 10pm to 6am, and on Sunday from 12am to noon.

MS SQL Server and Oracle Databases

  • Hosting for small databases in shared environments is available at no charge to University departments that do not use resources to such an extent as to interfere with other users of these services.
  • Administration of larger databases or databases with special needs are available for a fee.

MySQL Database

MySQL databases are available at no additional charge.
