UT Canvas Catalog is an outreach platform for non-credit, non-degree educational training that allows University of Tennessee, Knoxville units to centralize their public outreach, continuing education programs, and professional development offerings in an attractive online marketplace.
UT Canvas Catalog Features
- There are two sides to UT Canvas Catalog that interact with each other:
- Catalog – storefront interface that handles course enrollments and login at https://canvascatalog.utk.edu
- Canvas – learning management system for courses
- UTK users should always log in with their UPN as their username (NetID@vols.utk.edu for students and NetID@utk.edu for faculty and staff) and NetID password and complete DUO authentication if prompted. All UTK faculty, staff, and students automatically receive a UT account in Canvas Catalog. These accounts are updated weekly.
- Non-UTK users should create a guest account.
- Departments can use UT Canvas Catalog to:
- Open course and program enrollment to the public, limit enrollment to UTK users, or provide course access only to specific individuals
- Offer no-fee and/or fee-based courses and programs
- Charge the enrollment fee, paid directly to the department though the TouchNet Payment Gateway
- Offer discounts and promotional codes to learners
- Offer a certificate of completion for a course and/or a program
Setting Up a Canvas Catalog Course
We at OIT are happy to assist you in offering a course or a program in Canvas Catalog.
- To request a Canvas Catalog course, please complete our onboarding form. We will contact you within 24 hours to set up an initial consultation.
- To discuss Canvas Catalog with us, please submit a request online.
There is a fee structure associated with Canvas Catalog
Catalog courses are $9.00 per user per course (one-time fee per enrollment), effective August 1, 2022, per our contract with Canvas. The departments/colleges are billed monthly, only for the new enrollments. To discuss specific costs per course or program, please submit a request online.
When will OIT charge my department/college a fee to use Canvas Catalog?
OIT does not charge your department/college when a course or program:
- has no fee and
- limits enrollment to UTK users only.
For all other courses or programs, OIT will charge the department/college a one-time $9.00 fee per user (both UTK and non-UTK users) per course.
Examples
- No charge: A course with no fee that is open only to UTK users.
- Charge applies: A course with no fee that opens enrollment to UTK and non-UTK users.
- Charge applies: A course with a fee, even if enrollment is limited to UTK users.

UTK users and current guests (non-UTK users with an existing guest account):
- Visit UT Canvas Catalog and select the course of interest, OR follow the link shared by the instructor.
- Select Enroll Now.
- Select Sign in to enroll. You will be presented with two login options.
- Log in with UTK NetID – – UTK users, enter your UPN as your username (NetID@vols.utk.edu for students and NetID@utk.edu for faculty and staff) and NetID password and complete DUO authentication if prompted. All UTK faculty, staff, and students automatically receive a UT account in Canvas Catalog. Note that these accounts are created at the beginning of each week.
- Log in without UTK NetID – – Non-UTK users, enter the email address and password you used to create your UT Canvas Catalog account.
- Select Enroll in Course.
- NOTE: To enroll in a course that has a fee:
- Enter a Promotion Code if you have one and select Apply.
- Select Proceed to Payment to complete your enrollment. You will be presented with a secure payment page. Follow the prompts on the screen to complete your payment.
- NOTE: To enroll in a course that has a fee:
- Upon successful enrollment, a confirmation message will be displayed on your screen and a Catalog Enrollment Confirmation email will be sent to the email address associated with your UTK account.
- Select Go to Course. You will be taken to the Canvas Catalog course. Begin learning! NOTE: Bookmark the course for a quicker access.
Non-UTK users, please create a guest account to enroll in a course/program:
- Visit UT Canvas Catalog and select the course of interest, OR follow the link shared by the instructor.
- Select Enroll. You will be presented with an option to sign in or sign up. As a new user, you want to sign up for a new account.
- Fill out the Sign up online form and select Register New Account.
- Only for Fee-Based courses:
- If a course has a fee: Enter a Promotion Code if you have one and select Apply, and select Register New Account.
- You will be presented with a secure payment page. Follow the prompts on the screen to complete your payment.
- Only for Fee-Based courses:
- Check your email for a Welcome to Catalog message to complete registration and create a password. In the email, select Complete Registration. NOTE: The link will open the Welcome Aboard page. Your login ID is the email you indicated in your guest account registration.
- Enter a password of your choosing.
- Select your Time Zone.
- Select Register.
- After successful registering, you will be presented with Canvas Catalog Student Dashboard page in your web browser. If prompted to log in, always be sure to log in “Without UTK NetID.”
- Select Begin Course in Catalog Student Dashboard. NOTE: Your course appears under the In Progress tab. For more information about this page, review the guide called How do I use the Student Dashboard in Catalog?
- Bookmark your Canvas Catalog course for a quick access.
- Check your email for the Catalog Enrollment Confirmation message stating that you are enrolled in the course. Save the email for your records.
How do I log in to UT Canvas Catalog to access the course in which I am already enrolled?
- Visit UT Canvas Catalog
- Select Login or Create Guest Account in the upper right-hand corner.
- Select your login option and follow the instructions on the screen:
- Log in with UTK NetID – UTK users, enter your UPN as your username (NetID@vols.utk.edu for students and NetID@utk.edu for faculty and staff) and NetID password and complete DUO authentication if prompted.
- Log in without UTK NetID – Non-UTK users, enter the email address and password you used to create your UT Canvas Catalog account.
- Upon successful login, you will access the Student Dashboard page that lists courses in which you are enrolled. Student Dashboard is also available by selecting Student Dashboard in the drop-down menu next to your name in the upper right-hand corner. How do I log in to UT Canvas Catalog to access my course on the Canvas Student mobile app?
- Install and open the Canvas Student app on your mobile device.
- Tap Find my school. NOTE: Do not search for University of Tennessee, Knoxville because it uses a separate instance of Canvas.
- Enter ut.instructure.com and tap Go or Return. The Canvas Catalog login page will be displayed.
- Select your login option and follow the instructions on the screen.
- Log in with UTK NetID – UTK users, enter your UPN as your username (NetID@vols.utk.edu for students and NetID@utk.edu for faculty and staff) and NetID password and complete DUO authentication if prompted.
- Log in without UTK NetID – Non-UTK users, enter the email address and password you used to create your UT Canvas Catalog account.
- Upon successful login, you will access the Canvas Catalog student dashboard page. Select a course in which you are enrolled. Find the information about using the Canvas courses on a mobile device at Canvas Student iOS Guide and Canvas Student Android Guide.
How do non-UTK users reset their password?
- Visit UT Canvas Catalog.
- Select the Login or Create Guest Account link located in the upper right-hand corner.
- On the page that appears, select the Log in without UTK NetID button.
- Select the Forgot Password? link.
- Enter the email address that was used to create the UT Canvas Catalog account.
- Select the Request Password button.
- You will receive an email message with a link to change your password.
How do I obtain a certificate of completion?
The instructor may enable a certificate of completion for a course or a program. In that case, UT Canvas Catalog automatically issues a certificate to learners when they have completed all requirements in a modules-based course.
To view and download the certificate:
- Visit theUT Canvas Catalog website.
- Select Login or Create Guest Account in the upper right-hand corner.
- Select your login option and follow the instructions on the screen:
- Log in with UTK NetID – UTK users, enter your UPN as your username (NetID@vols.utk.edu for students and NetID@utk.edu for faculty and staff) and NetID password and complete DUO authentication if prompted.
- Log in without UTK NetID – Non-UTK users, enter the email address and password you used to create your guest account.
- Upon successful login, Student Dashboard lists courses in which you are enrolled. Student Dashboard is also available by selecting Student Dashboard in the drop-down menu next to your name in the upper right-hand corner.
- Select the Completed tab. The certificate can be viewed and downloaded using links next to the course name.
How do I access courses in a certificate program?
Some program courses may not visible in the public view of Canvas Catalog. If you are enrolled in a program, you can access the program courses from Student Dashboard.
- Visit theUT Canvas Catalog website.
- Select Login or Create Guest Account in the upper right-hand corner.
- Select your login option and follow the instructions on the screen:
- Log in with UTK NetID – UTK users, enter your UPN as your username (NetID@vols.utk.edu for students and NetID@utk.edu for faculty and staff) and NetID password and complete DUO authentication if prompted.
- Log in without UTK NetID – Non-UTK users, enter the email address and password you used to create your guest account.
- Upon successful login, Student Dashboard lists courses in which you are enrolled. Student Dashboard is also available by selecting Student Dashboard in the drop-down menu next to your name in the upper right-hand corner.
- Select the In Progress tab.
- The Programs section displays your program details. View all courses included in the program in the Requirements list.
- Available program courses display a Begin Course button.
- Courses you have started display a Resume Course button.
- If a course is not yet available, the course image displays a lock icon.
