Are You New—Researchers

Welcome to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville!
We’re here to help you with the research technology services you will use on campus. Whether creating a survey and analyzing the results, statistical consulting, support for machine learning, analyzing secure data, accessing and learning research software, or accessing powerful, high-performance computing services, we can help!
OIT supports your research endeavors with consultations and access to research software.
Research Computing Support for Academics
Research Computing Support (RCS) provides expertise in advanced statistical analysis, qualitative research methodologies, machine learning, and geographic information systems support to faculty, staff, and student researchers.

Support Services: RCS team members provide one-on-one consultations focusing on your individual research needs. Discuss various methods for collecting data, performing data analysis, developing interactive geocoded maps, exploring data visualizations, and much more!
Research Software for Academic Use: Available to most faculty, staff, researchers, and students for internal teaching, learning, and academic research.
Web Surveys: Get help building and administering online web surveys and work with RCS consultants to review your survey before distribution and analyze your data once it’s collected.
Assisted Publication: RCS statisticians have co-authored over 350 manuscripts. If you are looking for assistance with writing or editing your results sections, we can help!

High-Performance Computing

High Performance and Scientific Computing (HPSC) provides compute cluster resources and services with ISAAC (Infrastructure for Scientific Applications and Advanced Computing). ISAAC includes Knoxville campus resources for research involving non-sensitive and sensitive information. Each environment has dedicated nodes, GPUs, memory, and storage.
- ISAAC Environments
- ISAAC Secure Enclave for sensitive research involving Protected Health Information (PHI) and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)
- ISAAC Next Gen and ISAAC ORI for non-sensitive research
- ISAAC Resources: Available to UT faculty and students; sponsored access for non-UT researchers may be considered for projects involving a UT faculty lead.
- Request an ISAAC account: Obtaining an ISAAC account will allow you to access HPC resources.
- Node and Storage Investments: Faculty and other University researchers may purchase compute nodes to be placed in the ISAAC HPC cluster using sponsored research funds, startup funds, or other funds for a private condo.
- UT-StorR: Archival storage system for the long-term storage of research data and data collections intended for use by UTK researchers, UTK researchers using the ISAAC HPC cluster resources, and for use by the UTK Core Facilities.
- ISAAC Open OnDemand: Web-based GUI interface for access to ISAAC cluster resources without requiring Linux scripting. Manage files and jobs, and access graphical interfaces all through the web.
- Proposal Development: Support faculty and researchers with proposal development, including computing resources and professional services.
- Bioinformatics Computing Support: Support for bioinformatics and computational biology researchers at UT. HPSC bioinformaticians and data scientists offer various services to help researchers specifically analyze bioinformatics pipelines using the ISAAC computing resources.
