Prompting and AI Assistant Creation

There is no real magic to writing prompts, but there are strategies for ‘prompting‘ that seem to help the AI model return more useful results. Prompt engineering involves creating and refining inputs to help genAI tools provide quality responses. Since genAI cannot think for itself, prompts play an important role in ensuring that responses are meaningful and align with intended goals.

Effective AI Prompts

Watch our video on The Basics of Effective AI Prompts. Learn how clear, precise prompts help lead to clear, concise responses.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PROMPT WRITING

You need to create effective prompts to harness the power of AI. Think of prompts as the questions or commands we give to AI. The better our prompts, the more accurate and useful the AI’s responses will be. Remember that clear, precise questions lead to clear, concise answers.

KEY ELEMENTS OF AN EFFECTIVE PROMPT

Let’s go over some key elements of effective prompt writing, though note that you do not need to use all of these elements in every prompt. Use the elements that you feel will provide you with the best results.

  • Purpose – What do you want the AI to do? What is the goal of the prompt? Is it to generate ideas, encourage creative thinking, or guide research? Your purpose will shape the prompt’s directions.
  • Context – Include the background information or setting and audience that will help the AI understand and generate appropriate responses.
  • Constraints – This includes any limitations or conditions that guide the AI’s response and sets boundaries within which the AI must operate. Without these parameters an AI might provide an overly broad or irrelevant information.
  • Tone – If you’d like your response written in a certain tone of voice, you can specify this in your prompt. Such as, write in a professional voice, rewrite this paragraph in a persuasive voice, or sound friendly and exciting!
  • Format – Describe how you want the feedback from your prompt to look, or be formatted.

Once you’re comfortable using the key elements for effective prompting, you might want to try using your natural conversation skills. When you use conversational prompts, you’re essentially tapping into how people naturally communicate and access knowledge. UT Verse, AI Assistant: Creating an AI Assistant

UT Verse, AI Assistant has the capability to set up multiple AI Assistants to help you complete specific tasks. Why would you want to create an AI Assistant? It will get you quicker results than prompting with multiple prompts to get you the format, tone, branding, and results you are seeking. So, a little effort and thought on the front end for setting up an AI Assistant will save you abundant time and effort later. You can also share an AI Assistant that you create with others (like your students or friends).

Right now, AI Assistant can only create written results, but working with data is coming next! Once the AI Assistant(s) is created, you would select it from the menu and upload your files for the AI Assistant to help with.

Here are some ways you can leverage an AI Assistant:

  • Test formatting AI that can take your questions and format the test in a particular way that you specify.
  • Role playing wherein you specify an historical figure for students to interact with.
  • Language learning where activities can be created in a foreign language as you direct.
  • Tutor AI that provides feedback on students’ assignments using parameters that you designate.
  • Concept assistant that can help explain concepts in a manner which you describe.
  • Time Management coach that can help with instructions on prioritizing tasks based on deadlines and importance.
  • Conversation AI that does not respond with long winded responses and responds more like a human would.
  • Brainstorm AI which helps brainstorm a topic in a certain way
  • Lecture Assistant that helps generate lecture notes and presentations quickly.  Prepare lecture outlines and detailed notes on various topics.
  • Editor AI which helps edit your work in the format and style that you specify
  • Grant Writing AI that is an expert at helping review and draft grants (Note: conceptual only, there is a plague of grants written entirely using AI but it can be helpful with editing)

The possibilities are endless! Watch this video that steps you through the process of setting up an AI Assistant.

After watching the video, return here to review the AI Assistant Personality, student assignment submitted for feedback, and the feedback the AI Assistant provided.

**Student:** Hi, I need help with my reflection assignment for my class at UT.

**UT Reflect AI:** Hello! I’m UT Reflect AI, your AI tutor. I’d be happy to help you with your reflection assignment. Could you please tell me more about the assignment and the experience you need to reflect on?

**Student:** Sure, I need to reflect on a group project we did last month. **UT Reflect AI:** Great! Let’s start by describing the project in detail. What was your role in the group, and what were the main objectives of the project?

Introduction: During the past semester, I participated in a group project for my Business Management class. The project involved developing a marketing strategy for a local business. Our group consisted of five members, and my role was to conduct market research and analyze competitors.

Description of the Experience: The project started with an initial meeting where we divided the tasks among ourselves. I was responsible for gathering data on market trends and competitor strategies. Throughout the project, we had weekly meetings to discuss our progress and integrate our findings into a cohesive strategy.

Critical Analysis: While the project was completed on time, there were several challenges that impacted our overall performance. One major issue was the lack of effective communication within the group. Often, team members would miss meetings or fail to update others on their progress, leading to confusion and delays.

In terms of my own performance, I realized that I struggled with time management. Balancing this project with other coursework and personal commitments was difficult, and I often found myself rushing to meet deadlines. Additionally, I noticed that my market research lacked depth in certain areas, which could have been improved with more thorough analysis.

Feelings and Thoughts: Throughout the project, I felt a mix of frustration and determination. The communication issues were particularly frustrating because they hindered our ability to work efficiently as a team. However, I was determined to contribute my best effort and ensure that my part of the project was completed to a satisfactory standard.

Learning and Application: From this experience, I learned the importance of clear communication and time management in collaborative projects. In future group assignments, I plan to suggest more structured communication methods, such as regular check-ins and detailed progress reports. Additionally, I will prioritize my tasks more effectively to ensure that I can dedicate sufficient time to each aspect of the project. Conclusion: Overall, this group project was a valuable learning experience. While there were several areas where our performance could have been improved, it provided me with insights into the dynamics of teamwork and the importance of effective communication and time management. Moving forward, I will apply these lessons to enhance my contributions in future group projects.

Introduction: During the past semester, I participated in a group project for my Business Management class. The project involved developing a marketing strategy for a local business. Our group consisted of five members, and my role was to conduct market research and analyze competitors.

Description of the Experience: The project started with an initial meeting where we divided tasks among ourselves based on our strengths. I was responsible for gathering data on market trends and competitor strategies. Throughout the project, we had weekly meetings to discuss our progress and integrate our findings into a cohesive strategy. One specific challenge I faced was accessing up-to-date data on competitors, which required creative problem-solving and reaching out to industry contacts.

Critical Analysis: While the project was completed on time, several challenges impacted our overall performance. One major issue was the lack of effective communication within the group; for instance, during one critical phase, two team members missed meetings without prior notice, leading to delays in integrating their parts into the final strategy. In terms of my own performance, I struggled with time management due to balancing this project with other coursework and personal commitments. I often found myself rushing to meet deadlines, which affected the depth of my market research in certain areas.

Feelings and Thoughts: Throughout the project, I felt a mix of frustration and determination. The communication issues were particularly frustrating because they hindered our ability to work efficiently as a team. However, there were moments when our collaboration clicked well—like when we successfully brainstormed innovative marketing tactics—which were very rewarding. Despite these ups and downs, I was determined to contribute my best effort and ensure that my part of the project was completed satisfactorily.

Learning and Application: From this experience, I learned the importance of clear communication and time management in collaborative projects. In future group assignments, I plan to suggest more structured communication methods such as regular check-ins via Slack or detailed progress reports using shared documents like Google Docs. Additionally, I will prioritize my tasks more effectively by using planners and setting intermediate deadlines to ensure that each aspect of my work receives adequate attention.

Conclusion: Overall, this group project was a valuable learning experience. While there were several areas where our performance could have been improved, it provided me with insights into teamwork dynamics and emphasized the importance of effective communication and time management. Moving forward, I will apply these lessons by implementing structured communication methods and better task prioritization in future group projects.
