Understanding Microsoft Office Licensing

Are you confused about who gets Microsoft Office and who doesn’t? We’re here to help you make sense of Microsoft licensing.

Faculty, staff, students, sponsored accounts, faculty retirees, emeritus faculty, and departmental accounts with a NetID have access to Microsoft 365, the online portal for Microsoft. You may want to note that the Microsoft Office 365 version receives the latest and greatest features first. Microsoft 365 can help you:

  • Stay organized with Email, Calendar, and Contacts
  • Store and share with OneDrive
  • Create and collaborate using Online Office web apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote)
  • Communicate effortlessly via Teams
  • Get creative with Sway
  • Manage appointments through Bookings
  • Plan tasks with Planner

All active students and most active faculty and staff have access to the full desktop version of Microsoft Office via Microsoft 365. You can install Microsoft Office on five devices, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access (PC Only), Publisher (PC only), and Office for mobile devices. It’s worth noting that Microsoft Office 365 receives the latest and greatest features first.

If you have someone who is not eligible for Microsoft Office via Microsoft 365 and is using a university-owned computer, you may install Microsoft Office from the OIT Software Download site on that computer. If you need to use these features, your department may purchase a license by contacting the OIT HelpDesk.
