From Workshop to Anytime: Bringing Live Training Online

Some of the most valuable learning opportunities on campus happen in workshops. Whether they happen in a conference room or over Zoom, they create energy, connection, and opportunities for real-time questions. Workshops support learning and engagement across campus throughout the year. What a single session can’t do is reach everyone who needs it or remain available when future learners are ready. When a workshop is worth offering again or making available to an audience that can’t all gather at once, an online, self‑paced version keeps that good work going.
Creating an effective online learning experience is more than simply posting a recording. The video you may already have is a useful starting point, but a strong self‑paced course reshapes the material for learners working on their own: focused segments instead of one long session, clear structure and navigation, and built-in ways to check understanding. The result respects a busy schedule and holds up over time, even as priorities and details shift.
Live and self‑paced formats each have their place, and they often work best together. A workshop builds connection in the moment, while an online version extends the reach, provides flexibility for learners who prefer to learn at their own pace, and gives everyone a reliable place to revisit.
A thoughtful conversation usually considers:
- What should be preserved from the live experience, and what should be reimagined for self-paced learning?
- How can content be organized into concise, focused segments instead of one long recording?
- Where can interactivity, reflection, or knowledge checks replace the give-and-take of a live session?
The OIT Training Development team has helped campus units turn multi-session workshops into engaging online learning experiences. If you’d like to expand the reach of a workshop, we’d be happy to discuss options for creating an online version.
