Computer Sign in Change for Windows Users

Logging in with Crtl+Alt+Delete

On May 21, the OIT Information Security team will implement the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keystroke sequence for signing in to all UT-owned and grant-funded computers. On this date, upon waking your Windows computer, the only way to activate the familiar computer sign-in process is by entering Ctrl+Alt+Delete on your keyboard.

How will this affect your computer and how you work?

While Ctrl+Alt+Delete is not a new process for securing your Windows machines, you may be accustomed to touching any button on your keyboard to activate your laptop or device from sleep mode or start up. Following this change, waking the computer will display a lock screen until the new sequence is entered. To assist you in building this new habit, you will see a prompt on your screensaver reminding you to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to sign in.

Why is the Change Necessary?

  1. Security: Ctrl+Alt+Delete is one of the best means of preventing unauthorized access to your computer and the only key sequence that will never allow your operating system to be redirected. This process ensures direct interaction with the operating system’s secure login screen, thereby safeguarding your credentials from potential interception by malicious software and unauthorized access to the system.
  1. User Authentication: It provides a consistent method for user authentication, ensuring that everyone follows the same secure procedure when accessing their accounts.
  1. Policy: Secure access for all UT owned computers is based on guidance from the CIS Critical Security Control’s benchmarks control 45.8 Level 1. View UT’s Secure Configuration Management policy to learn more.

By making this small sign-in process change, you help protect your personal information, UT data, and UT network from potential security threats.
