Canvas Portfolio: New Features

Canvas Portfolio New Features.

On September 19, Canvas released several new features for its Canvas Portfolio tool to improve the instructor and student experience. Each new feature updates adding and sharing evidence, commenting on content, embedding content, adding submissions to student projects, and editing published portfolios. Read below to find more about these new features.

For Instructors and Students

Assignment Import
Instructors and students are now able to import multiple Canvas assignments at once and add them as requirements in Evaluation and Showcase Portfolios. Assignment import saves users time by allowing them to be added quickly, without recreating each requirement by hand. Assignment import also ensures the content is connected back to the original course assignment.

Embedded Content
Instructors and students can embed HTML-based content within the Rich Content Editor (RCE) instead of uploading files or adding external links. Examples of HTML-based content include YouTube videos, Google Slides, etc. Embedding content allows instructors and students to show their interactive work as intended and provide easier engagement directly in the Portfolio.

For Instructors Only

Editing Published Portfolios
After an Evaluation Portfolio has been published, instructors can make specific edits without having to rebuild it from scratch. Having this edit permission allows instructors to keep one portfolio running across multiple semesters while also protecting existing student progress from unintended changes.

For Students Only

Assignment Snapshot
When students submit an assignment as portfolio evidence, a snapshot captures the attachment and the submission date and time. This snapshot gives both students and instructors a stable, accurate record of submitted work, with control over when updates are reflected and clear visibility into any file limitations.

Assignment Sharing
Students are now able to directly share assignment submissions as evidence in both Evaluation and Showcase portfolios. Assignment sharing lets students share coursework straight from an assignment, with upfront warnings about which files won’t appear in the shared view.

Add Assignment Submissions to Projects
Students can add assignment submissions directly from their course as evidence, and once added, the files remain viewable to students and instructors after the course ends. This feature keeps portfolio evidence complete and reliable over time.
