Communicating with Students Using Canvas Core Features

Office of Innovative Technologies, UT logo.

Canvas communication tools help create a supportive learning environment. Features such as the Syllabus, Announcements, and Inbox help establish clear expectations, share important course updates, and maintain regular communication with students throughout the semester. Using these tools consistently can help students stay informed, engaged, and connected.

Course Syllabus

The Syllabus in Canvas makes it easy to communicate to your students exactly what will be required of them throughout the course in chronological order. Linked directly to the navigation menu, it gives students easy access to your course’s expectations, policies, and schedule. Learn more about using the syllabus as an instructor

Announcements

Canvas announcements allow faculty to share important information with students. In a published course, you can post course updates, reminders, clarifications, or weekly overviews. It’s a quick and effective way to stay connected with your class and maintain a consistent instructor presence throughout the semester. Learn more about adding an announcement in a course.

Inbox

The Canvas Inbox makes it easier for you to communicate with all your students. It keeps all course-related messages organized and tied to the course context. Learn more about using the Inbox as an instructor

Both faculty and students need to manage their notification settings to receive alerts when announcements, messages, or course activities are posted.

Tip 1: Ensure your notifications are set to alert you when students reply to your Inbox messages or Announcements.

Tip 2: Remind your students to update their notification preferences so they don’t miss any course updates.
