Best Practices for Managing Your ISAAC Data

Managing Your HPC Data text with technology background imagery

We want to help you get the most out of ISAAC-NG. Here are a few friendly reminders and tips to help you manage your data effectively.

Use Lustre for your active research work

The Lustre file system is optimized for fast, high-performance file access, and your scratch  and project directories are already there! Use these directories instead of your home directory to take advantage of the performance benefits of Lustre.

Use UT-StorR for long-term storage

Because Lustre is not backed up, use UT-StorR for long-term and archival storage. It’s a great way to keep your important data safe!

Globus simplifies data transfer

Globus is a web application that takes the complexity out of data transfer. Access step-by-step instructions for uploading and downloading large datasets on HPSC Data Transfer on ISAAC-NG.

ACTION NEEDED FROM LUSTRE USERS: Help us keep ISAAC–NG

Our recent usage statistics indicate that the Lustre file system is currently near capacity.

  1. If you have temporary files, especially in scratch, please consider deleting them to reduce your overall storage footprint.
  2. Additionally, if you have inactive files or files more than 180 days old, please consider moving them to UT–StorR, the University of Tennessee’s archival tape storage system. UT-StorR is a great long-term home for research data that you need to retain but access infrequently.

You can help keep our ISAAC–NG environment and your data purge-free by archiving any unused data to UT–StorR. Your cooperation goes a long way in keeping free storage available for the whole community.

For questions or assistance with ISAAC-NG, UT-StorR, or Globus, please submit an online request via OIT HelpDesk.
