There are several ways to obtain software at UT:
All of our software licenses require that you use the software only for academic or administrative purposes. If the software use benefits any outside organization, you need to purchase a regular license even if you do not charge that organization. A brief description of many of our software licenses and how we support them can be found here.
Many software packages are available for download from OIT. Most of this software is centrally funded (free!) at the Knoxville campus. Availability at other campuses varies depending upon the cost sharing decisions each has made.
The following packages are available at our software distribution page. Note that installation and activation instructions and codes are usually a separate download!
UT faculty, staff, and students can purchase software for departmental and personal use at VOLTECH (formerly known as the Bookstore Technology Center).
Faculty and staff employees are eligible under UTK's Microsoft Campus Agreement to purchase and download a copy of the current version of Microsoft Office for home use at a significantly reduced price. Details about Microsoft's Home Use Program (HUP) and instructions for downloading are found on the Software Distribution site under the Microsoft link.
Our Apps@UT system lets you run research software as if it were installed on your own computer. The software actually runs on a Terminal Server called apps.utk.edu and displays an image of it on your computer. It is very easy to use since you can open and save files on your own computer's disk drive and print to your own printer. You can use it from any Windows, Macintosh, Linux, or Solaris computer.
UTK faculty, staff, and students can log onto the server using their NetID and password. Students who have suppressed their information in the UT directory need to send email to StatHelp@utk.edu to gain access.
A complete explanation of how to use Apps@UT can be found here.

We offer a large Linux-based compute cluster for calculations that require long processing times, a high degree of parallelism, or large data sets. You have the opportunity to execute your calculations on thousands of processors simultaneously and have access to large, high performance storage systems. Several commercial software packages are available for use (including MatLab, Maple, SAS, and SPSS) as well as a complete suite of open source tools. Researchers also have multiple compiler options for developing and executing custom applications. More information is available at http://newton.utk.edu/.
