Three Easy Ways to Embed PowerPoint Slides in Canvas

Embed Power Point Slides into Canvas graphic

Embedding PowerPoint slides directly into Canvas can help create a more seamless and accessible learning experience for students. By placing presentations within a Canvas page, instructors can keep course materials organized, reduce the need for downloads, and make content easier to view across devices. Below are three reliable ways to embed PowerPoint slides in Canvas.

1. Upload to Canvas Files and embed on a Page

Uploading to the Canvas files area keeps your content inside Canvas, easy to edit, and helps students view the deck inline:

  1. Upload the PowerPoint to Canvas Files:
  2. Create or edit a Canvas Page:
    • Go to Pages > + Page. or open an existing page > Edit.
  3. Embed the file:
  4. Save:
    • Click Save or Save & Publish.

Additional Tips:

  • Update the PPTX file in Files by uploading a new version.
  • If you updated the File, but the Page shows the old version, try replacing the file using the same name, then refresh. If needed, remove and re-embed.
  • If students are unable to view the slides, confirm that the file is published/available.
  • Take the necessary accessibility steps: Ensure your PowerPoint uses headings, meaningful slide titles, good color contrast, and alt text for images.

2. Upload to OneDrive and embed via Microsoft 365

If you have content in Office 365, you can upload a PowerPoint to OneDrive and embed it into Canvas:

  1. Upload the PPTX file to OneDrive
  2. Open the file in PowerPoint for the web.
  3. Use Share to create a link with appropriate permissions (typically view-only for students).
  4. Copy the PowerPoint Embed code: Select File > Share > Embed this presentation > Highlight and Copy the Embed Code.
  5. In Canvas, edit a Page and use the Rich Content Editor (RCE) to embed: Select Insert > Embed > Paste Code > Submit.

Additional Tips:

  • Be careful with permissions. If shared incorrectly, students will see an access error.
  • If the embedded slide appears too small after embedding, click the embedded item and adjust size options if available, or provide a direct link below it.

 3. Sharing the slides in Video Format

To increase accessibility and engagement, you can add PowerPoint slides as a video in Canvas via Canvas Studio:

  1. Save the PPT file as an MP4 video.
  2. Upload it to Canvas Studio.
  3. Embed the Studio video into a Canvas page.
  4. Optional: Disable download to prevent students from downloading it.

Additional Tips:

  • Add context above the embed. Include a brief video description and link it to course objectives.
  • Accessibility. Ensure that the video contains captions
  • Provide a download link. Some students prefer offline access or need it for accommodation.
