Live Collaboration in ATLAS.ti Web for Qualitative Research

Did you know that UTK provides access to both the desktop and web versions of ATLAS.ti for faculty, staff, and students? The web version in particular makes it easier for research teams to work together on qualitative projects without having to be in the same location—or even on the same device.
Collaborative qualitative research often involves multiple coders or analysts working across courses, departments, or campuses. ATLAS.ti Web helps streamline this process by allowing team members to log in through a web browser and contribute directly to a shared project. Instead of circulating multiple versions of the same file by email, teams can code, write memos, and refine codebooks together in one central space.
The platform also includes tools that support research rigor. Teams can track coding consistency through intercoder agreement measures, build and adjust codebooks collaboratively, and maintain a record of coding activity, memos, and project changes. This creates a transparent workflow that is particularly helpful for teaching, mentoring, and group research projects.
For those who need more advanced features—such as detailed visualizations or integration with statistical software—projects can move seamlessly between the web and desktop versions. This flexibility allows researchers to select the environment that best fits their project stage while keeping the team’s work aligned.
Researchers can access ATLAS.ti Web through UTK’s site license by following the installation instructions available on the UTK software download page. Twenty users may use the ATLAS.ti license simultaneously. In addition, Research Computing Support offers individual consultations and training to help users make the most of the software. These services not only support collaborative approaches to qualitative research but also create an accessible space for students, faculty, and staff to work together in real time.
