Do You Collect Any Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) in Your Research?
Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) was established by Executive Order 13556 (2010) and is government-created or owned information that requires safeguarding or dissemination controls consistent with applicable laws, regulations, and government-wide policies. CUI requirements flow down via sponsored project contracts, grants, or other agreements when UT research projects are to receive, possess, or create information for or on behalf of the U.S. government. This includes direct sponsored projects with federal agencies and contracts and agreements with non-federal government agencies and organizations where the CUI-related security requirements flow down via the contracts or agreements to the University of Tennessee.
Examples of CUI:
- Controlled technical information with military or space applications
- Protected critical infrastructure security information
- Protected critical energy infrastructure information, including nuclear reactors and materials
- Export control information or materials
- Financial Data
- Information related to agricultural operations
- Taxpayer information
How can you ensure your CUI data stays secure?
OIT provides a list of tools that are permitted and supported for use with CUI information along with tools that should be avoided.
