Travel Tips: Safe Web Surfing
While you may be traveling over the upcoming holiday break, remember the bad guys don’t take time off.
Here are a few ways to stay safe online:
- Be wary of emails that urge you to take immediate action before returning to campus.
- Don’t do anything via public Wi-Fi you wouldn’t want an eavesdropper to know — including logging into accounts with passwords. Use public Wi-Fi for topics of conversation you would happily discuss in public.
- If you’re not on campus and need to access campus services, you should sign in to the UTK Virtual Private Network (VPN) before connecting to the service.
- Don’t let your device connect to public Wi-Fi spots automatically.
- Check with the establishment you’re visiting to ensure the network you log onto is theirs, and not one a snoop has set up to trick you.
