Celebrating Victor Hazlewood’s Contributions to HPSC

After 17 years at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Victor Hazlewood has retired as Associate CIO and Director of High Performance & Scientific Computing (HPSC). His leadership and expertise have been instrumental in transforming UT’s research computing landscape and shaping the HPSC team into what it is today.
Impact on HPSC
Since joining as HPSC Director in September 2020, he has played a pivotal role in advancing UT’s high-performance computing infrastructure, including:
- Expanding GPU and large-memory compute resources.
- Strengthening the Secure Enclave for sensitive research data.
- Supporting AI research and faculty collaborations.
- Enhancing research computing services and storage capacity.
A Career of Excellence in HPC
Hazlewood’s career spans leadership roles at Texas A&M, the San Diego Supercomputer Center, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and UT Knoxville. A Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) since 2002, he has led national supercomputing initiatives, including NPACI, TeraGrid, and XSEDE.
Key Milestones Under Hazlewood’s leadership at UT:
September 1, 2020: Hazlewood joins as HPSC Director.
October 2020-August 2021: Expansion of GPU and large-memory compute nodes.
July 2021: First user jobs on new large-memory cascade lake compute nodes.
2022-2024: Growth of AI research support and Secure Enclave resources.
Hazlewood’s leadership established a strong foundation for the future of high-performance computing at UT. As we celebrate his retirement, we extend our gratitude for his years of service and dedication. His contributions will leave a lasting impact on UT’s research community.
