Proctorio is a fully automated online proctoring service that uses the Google Chrome browser to monitor student test-taking behavior. It offers students a secure and convenient way to take proctored exams online within Online@UT (Canvas); it does not prevent cheating entirely. The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has adopted Proctorio as our online proctoring service provider to ensure the academic integrity of online exams.
With Proctorio, you can help preserve exam integrity in Canvas courses in three main ways:
After an exam, Proctorio’s algorithms automatically look over student recordings. You set the behaviors you want flagged as unusual activities by the algorithms. You and/or your teaching assistants then review the recordings and flags to determine whether any activity constitutes actual misconduct.
An Online@UT (Canvas) Proctorio support documentation site has been developed to familiarize faculty and students with Proctorio. Faculty will learn about best practices including wording for your syllabus. Faculty and students will learn how to get started with Proctorio, troubleshooting tips, and can review FAQs. Turnitin Similarity, a web-based originality and plagiarism prevention service, promotes academic integrity, deters plagiarism, and simplifies feedback and manual grading processes by checking the integrity of student work submitted through Canvas. Through extensive text similarity searches and cross-references, Turnitin educates students about the appropriate use of sources, paraphrasing, citing, and excessive quoting. By quantifying the similarity in student work, Turnitin Similarity helps instructors determine if matches meet assignment expectations. This guide provides instructors and students with the basics for using Turnitin Similarity in Canvas course assignment(s).
Turnitin is available in Online@UT (Canvas) through the Canvas Assignment feature. Instructors can create an online assignment and add Turnitin to that assignment. When students upload written work to the assignment, Turnitin compares the submissions against a repository of publications, journals, periodicals, other internet sources, and student-submitted work. A detailed Similarity Report is generated for both instructors and students that identify text similar to these sources.
After students submit their work through the Canvas Assignment feature, a Turnitin Similarity Report is generated, accompanied by a similarity score. This score indicates the percentage of matching and similar text found in the paper. The Similarity Report summary highlights the areas of similarity and provides instructors and students with a visual and numerical indicator of the paper’s content matches. It can help students identify paraphrases or citations that need revision and improve their writing.
