New Students Get Outlook Email

The Office of Innovative Technologies is announcing changes to Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace for Education, the enterprise communication and collaboration systems currently used on campus. These service-offering updates are in response to recent announcements by Microsoft and Google, allowing us to offer better security and a more consistent user experience. At the same time, we are working to manage the rising costs from Microsoft and Google due to recent changes to their online services.

Email will be provided by Microsoft Outlook

Starting November 2023, new students will use Microsoft Outlook for email.

  • Microsoft licensing includes advanced security features and is most effective at reducing institutional risk when everyone uses Microsoft Outlook for email.
  • Students will continue to have a UT Google account for Drive and online apps, but email will be provided by Microsoft.
  • Students who are currently using Gmail may choose to switch to Microsoft Outlook.
  • New faculty and staff will continue to use Microsoft Outlook for email.

Google will be limited to core apps for individuals

OIT recommends using Microsoft OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams for online file storage and collaboration and will limit the use of non-core Google apps, such as Photos, for new students.
