Don’t Let Cyberthreats Disrupt Your Semester

Service navigation

As the semester begins, information security remains one of the most important responsibilities shared across the university. Cybercriminals continue to target higher‑education institutions, and every email, device, and login we use plays a role in protecting university data. OneIT’s Information Security team provides the tools, training, and guidance needed to keep our campus secure, including annual security awareness training, phishing prevention resources, secure network infrastructure, and clear policies that govern how university technology and data should be used.

From our largest technology user base to campus leaders, departmental technology support staff, and faculty, these partners are essential in maintaining UT’s security posture. OneIT offers a Learning Library of security articles, guidance for protecting accounts, and resources for recognizing and reporting phishing attempts. Annual Information Security Awareness Training is required for faculty, staff, and graduate assistants, and beginning in 2026, failure to complete it can result in restricted access to essential university systems.

Top Five Things to Know as the Semester Gets Underway

  1. Complete your required Information Security Awareness Training.
Faculty, staff, and graduate assistants must finish annual training by the campus deadline to maintain access to email, Teams, OneDrive, Canvas, VPN, and other essential systems.
  1. Stay alert for phishing attempts.
Phishing remains one of the most common threats on campus. OneIT provides guidance on how to recognize suspicious emails, texts, and calls—and what to do if you receive one.
  1. Protect your NetID and accounts.
Use strong passwords, avoid reusing credentials, and follow OneIT’s recommended steps for securing your accounts, especially when traveling or working remotely.
  1. Know the University’s IT policies.
UT’s IT policies outline acceptable use, data protection requirements, secure network standards, and incident reporting procedures. These policies apply to all employees and help ensure compliance and security.
  1. Use OneIT’s security resources.
Explore the Learning Library for articles on current threats and best practices, review guidance for protecting accounts, and stay informed about phishing prevention and secure technology use.

With campus‑wide participation and consistent security practices, UT continues to strengthen its defenses and safeguard the information entrusted to us.
