Tips for Securing macOS
It’s no surprise that macOS is the second-biggest operating system worldwide. Apple has a well-regulated array of computers available for consumers that merge many strengths of the whole Apple ecosystem. However, this doesn’t mean that you should not take any steps to help secure your macOS computer.
Securing your Apple computer involves several steps to protect your data and privacy. Here are some best practices:
- Keep macOS Updated: Regularly update your operating system to ensure you have the latest security patches. Go to System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Enable FileVault: Encrypt your entire hard drive to protect your data. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > FileVault and turn it on.
- Use Strong Passwords: Set a strong password for your user account and enable Touch ID if available. Go to System Settings > Users & Groups to manage your password.
- Enable Firewall: Turn on the built-in firewall to block unauthorized access. Go to System Settings > Network > Firewall and enable it.
- Disable Automatic Login: Ensure automatic login is disabled to prevent unauthorized access. Go to System Settings > Users & Groups > Login Options.
- Use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Enable 2FA for your Apple ID to add an extra layer of security. Go to System Settings > Apple ID > Password & Security.
- Manage App Permissions: Regularly review and manage app permissions. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and adjust permissions for each app.
- Turn on Find My Mac: Enable this feature to locate your Mac if it’s lost or stolen. Go to System Settings > Apple ID > Find My.
- Disable Remote Access: Turn off remote access and sharing features if you don’t need them. Go to System Settings > Sharing and disable unnecessary options.
- Use a Non-Admin Account: For daily use, create and use a non-admin account to minimize the risk of unauthorized changes. Go to System Settings > Users & Groups to create a new account
