The Importance of Software Updates
There is always a bit of annoyance when we see that our computer needs an update. It always seems to happen when we are right in the middle of important work. We begrudgingly either install the updates or pick a time for the inevitable reboot. But did you know that generally those updates only cover the operating system and security patches? What about the web browser you use? What about Adobe or other software that you run?
Most modern programs include a service that checks for updates when you connect to the internet, but some don’t. There are some issues that can be caused by out-of-date software:
- Security Vulnerabilities:
Exploitation by Hackers: Outdated software often contains known security flaws that hackers can exploit to gain unauthorized access to your system. - Malware and Ransomware:
These vulnerabilities can be used to install malware or ransomware, potentially leading to data loss, financial damage, and operational disruptions. - Performance Problems:
System Instability: Outdated software can cause your system to run inefficiently, leading to crashes, slow performance, and reduced productivity. - Loss of Features and Support:
Missing Out on Improvements: Updates often include new features and performance enhancements. Not updating means missing out on these benefits.
Software is generally handled by our UT Staff for UT equipment; however, personal devices can become a vulnerability.
