Privacy Concerns with Onboard AI: Google Gemini

Ending the series of privacy concerns with onboard AI, Google Gemini, which uses the hardware on any Android smartphone with Gemini support, has been seen as a potential issue for user privacy.

Privacy Concerns Associated with Google Gemini:

  1. Data Collection: Gemini collects a wide range of data, including conversations, location, feedback, and usage information. This data is used to improve and develop Google’s products and services.
  1. Transcription and Recording: In some instances, Gemini continued to gather and summarize sensitive meeting information even after it was supposedly turned off. This raises concerns about transparency and user control.
  1. Retention of Data: Even if you delete your Gemini activity, conversations reviewed by human reviewers are retained for up to three years. This means your data might be stored longer than you expect.
  1. Smart Home Access: Gemini can control smart home devices like lights and thermostats without unlocking your phone. While convenient, it also means that the AI has access to potentially sensitive information.
  1. Confidential Information: Google warns users not to share confidential information with Gemini, as it might be reviewed by human reviewers. This raises concerns about who has access to your data and how it is used.

To Opt Out of Google Gemini, Follow These Steps

  1. Access Gemini Settings: Open the Gemini app and tap your avatar in the top right corner.
  1. Turn Off Activity: Go to Activity and select Turn off. This will stop Gemini from saving your activity.
  1. Manage Auto-Delete Settings: You can also change the auto-delete settings for your Gemini activity. Go to Activity, click Deleting activity older than… months, and choose your preferred auto-delete period.
  1. Disable Smart Features: In your personal inbox settings, go to General and turn off Smart features and personalization. This will limit Gemini’s presence in your inbox.

When You Opt Out of Google Gemini, Here is How Your Data is Handled:

  1. Activity Deletion: Any activity that was previously saved will be deleted according to your auto-delete settings. By default, activities older than 18 months is auto deleted, but you can change this to 3 or 36 months.
  1. Data Retention: Even after you turn off Gemini, your conversations are retained for up to 72 hours to allow Google to process any feedback and provide the service.
  1. Gems and Public Chats: Deleting your Gemini activity does not delete Gems or public chat links. These will still be saved to your account.
  1. Human Review: Conversations reviewed by human reviewers are retained for up to three years, even if you delete your activity.

If you value your data and privacy, it would be best to opt out of data collection and data sharing. You can always search for privacy-related articles and tools that help defend your privacy and data. Always remain vigilant on the systems you use for your data and privacy.
