Managing Permissions on Mobile Phones
Application permissions are settings that control what an app can access and do on your device. Here are some common types of permissions:
- Location: Allows an app to access your device’s location.
- Camera: Grants access to your device’s camera.
- Microphone: Permits the app use your microphone.
- Contacts: Allows the app to access your contacts.
- Storage: Permits the app to read and write to your device’s storage.
- Notifications: Enables the app to send you notifications.
- Calendar: Grants access to your calendar events.
- Bluetooth: Allows the app to connect to Bluetooth devices
These permissions can be needed for the application to function, but sometimes, the application takes more permissions than necessary. In the cybersecurity world, we would call that a violation of “Least Privilege” or just being allowed to do more than needed.
Managing app permissions on Android devices is straightforward:
- Open Settings: Tap on the Settings app on your device.
- Go to Apps: Scroll down and select Apps.
- Select the App: Find and tap on the app for which you want to manage permissions. If you can’t find it, tap See all apps.
- Tap Permissions: Once you’re in the app’s settings, tap on Permissions.
- Manage Permissions: You’ll see a list of permissions the app has requested. Tap on each permission to allow or deny access.
Alternatively, you can manage permissions by type:
- Open Settings: Tap on the Settings app.
- Go to Privacy: Select Privacy and then Permission manager.
- Select Permission Type: Choose a permission type (e.g., Camera, Location, Microphone).
- Manage Permissions: You’ll see a list of apps that have requested this permission. Tap on each app to allow or deny access.
Managing app permissions on iOS devices is quite simple:
- Open Settings: Tap on the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Go to Privacy & Security: Scroll down and select Privacy & Security.
- Select a Permission Category: You’ll see a list of permission categories such as Location Services, Camera, Microphone, etc. Tap on the category you want to manage.
- Manage Permissions: You’ll see a list of apps that have requested that permission. You can toggle the switch next to each app to allow or deny access.
Alternatively, you can manage permissions for individual apps:
- Open Settings: Tap on the Settings app.
- Scroll Down to the App: Scroll down to find the app for which you want to manage permissions.
- Tap on the App: Tap on the app’s name to see the permissions it has requested.
- Adjust Permissions: Toggle the switches next to each permission to allow or deny access.
These steps should help you control what data and features your apps can access. It is important to realize that some applications can ask for too many permissions and carefully consider what you are okay with allowing the application to access and do.
