Stata by StataCorp

What is it? Stata is a general purpose software package for statistics, data management, and graphics. Stata offers the flexibility to analyze data using either the programming language or its graphical user interface. Stata is designed to be easily extendable and there are hundreds of free plugins available through various internet repositories. Stata is particularly strong in time series, panel data, and the analysis of complex, non-random samples. Its data must fit into your computer’s main memory, limiting the amount of data it can handle. Click here to view the types of machine learning algorithms supported by this software.

What can I use it for? Enrolled students, faculty, and staff can use Stata for university-related teaching, research, or administrative purposes. Use for other purposes requires the purchase of a commercial license.

Where can I run it? Stata/SE is available at no additional charge to faculty, staff and students at UTK, UTC, and UTHSC for installation on university-owned and personally-owned Windows, Macs and Linux computers. The download and installation instructions are available at the OIT Software Download web page. Stata/MP is available to UTK faculty, staff, and students on OIT’s Apps@UT server and the computers in the OIT public computer labs. There is a 20 simultaneous user limit for Stata/MP. Instructions for installing add-ons to Stata on Apps@UT are here.

How can I learn it? To get started with Stata, you can watch the tutorials at the company’s YouTube training channel.

Where can I get support? OIT offers Minimal Support to University of Tennessee, Knoxville-area students, faculty, and staff for Stata, however there is a very active and helpful support group named StataList.
