Research Computing Support

SAS by SAS Institute

What is it? SAS is a suite for statistical analysis, data management, and graphics. There are two recommended ways to run SAS: SAS Foundation, using the original program editor; SAS Studio, a more modern interface for both programming and menu-based analysis. Other products included in the Education Analytical Suite are Enterprise Miner, used for data mining, and Text Miner, which can extract concepts or sentiment from large volumes of text. A comprehensive list of SAS software included is shown on the vendor’s Education Analytical Suite web page. Click here to view the types of machine learning algorithms supported by this software.

What can I use it for? Enrolled students, faculty, and staff can use SAS for university-related teaching and academic research purposes. SAS may not be used for commercial research. Use that benefits outside organizations requires the purchase of a commercial license.

Where can I run it? SAS is available at no additional charge to faculty, staff and students at UTK, UTC, UTHSC, and UTM for installation on university-owned and personally-owned Windows and Linux PCs. The download and installation instructions are on OIT’s software download page. For UTK, SAS is also available on OIT’s Apps@UT server, and on the computers in the OIT public computer labs. There is no simultaneous user limit for its use. People with extreme computational requirements can also run SAS batch jobs on ISAAC.

How can I learn it? OIT offers workshops each semester. You can schedule a one-on-one tutorial any time by calling the OIT HelpDesk at 865-974-9900. The SAS Institute support website offers free video tutorials and SAS e-learning courses (more details can be found in the installation instructions on OIT’s software download page).

Where can I get support? OIT offers Full Support for SAS, and Minimal Support for Enterprise Miner and Text Miner to University of Tennessee, Knoxville-area students, faculty, and staff. You can request assistance by calling the OIT HelpDesk at 865-974-9900. The SAS Institute support web site also offers “support communities” where you can ask questions and it provides a comprehensive set of online manuals.
