HLM by Scientific Software International, Inc.

What is it? HLM from Scientific Software International is a package that does multilevel models which are also often called Hierarchical Linear Models (HLMs). An example of a multilevel model is a regression equation showing how studying increases grades. That relationship may differ at different levels, such as teachers within schools within districts. What can the license be used for? Enrolled students, faculty, and staff are permitted to use HLM for university-related instruction and noncommercial academic research purposes.

Students, faculty, and staff are not permitted to use HLM for commercial research or administrative purposes. Use that benefits outside organizations requires the purchase of a commercial license.

Where can I run it? For UTK, HLM is available on OIT’s Apps@UT server and on the computers in the OIT public computer labs. There is a two simultaneous user limit for HLM.

How can I learn it? You can learn HLM from the resource page of SSI, which contains the entire manual. However, to understand the manual, you can use the book by the program’s developers, Raudenbush and Bryk, Hierarchical Liner Models, Applications and Data Analysis Methods which can be found on the author’s publications site.

Where can I get support? OIT offers Minimal Support to University of Tennessee, Knoxville-area students, faculty, and staff for this software. We can help you analyze HLM models using other software that we fully support. For assistance, contact the OIT HelpDesk at 865-974-9900.
