ArcGIS from Esri
What is it? Esri’s ArcGIS is an integrated suite of software products used for mapping/visualizing data, collecting geographic data, and spatial reasoning. Spatial analytics and 3D modeling features are also integrated into Esri products. The ArcGIS platform includes desktop software, Software as a Service (Saas), and Esri plug-ins and mobile apps. The UT ArcGIS Online portals (AGOL) are collaborative, cloud-based platforms that allow members to use, create, and share maps, apps, and data. Through AGOL, you get access to a secure cloud where you can manage, create, and store data as published map layers. Instructions to log into the UTK ArcGIS Online Portal are on our software distribution site. Information on all additional Esri plug ins and apps are available on the company’s apps page.
What can I use it for? Enrolled students, faculty, and staff can use Esri products for university-related academic research, teaching, and some administrative purposes. Use that benefits outside organizations requires the purchase of a commercial license. Commercial use of any Esri product is prohibited under the terms of the Site License Agreement. Those downloading software agree to permitted uses put forth in the site license agreement.
Where can I run it? ArcGIS is available at no additional charge to faculty, staff and students at UTK, UTHSC, UTC, UTM, and UTS. Students, faculty and staff can download the current version ArcGIS for Desktop and ArcGIS Pro software from the OIT software distribution site and install it on Windows or Linux machines. Legacy versions of the software and additional Esri software downloads outlined in the Educational Site License Agreement are also available for no additional cost by contacting the OIT HelpDesk or calling 865-974-9900.
Many Esri products can be run in the cloud as software as a service. In order to run all of the SaaS products available, users must create an account with the UTK ArcGIS Online portal. Most ArcGIS features can be controlled by menus, but programming using Python and JavaScript provide advanced functionality.
How can I learn it? To get started with ArcGIS, you can enroll in virtual training classes through the ESRI Academy. In order to access all the available training, students must first have an ArcGIS Online Account and then request training be added to their AGOL by contacting OIT HelpDesk. OIT offers introductory workshops on Esri software throughout the year. The LinkedIn Learning online training library offers free ArcGIS training videos to registered members.
Where can I get support? OIT offers Full Support to University of Tennessee, Knoxville-area students, faculty, and staff for ArcGIS. For additional licensing information, contact the OIT HelpDesk.
