Overleaf by Digital Science



What is it? Overleaf is a collaborative, online LaTeX editor designed to make the process of writing, editing and producing research papers and project reports much quicker for both you and your collaborators.

What is the difference between Overleaf and LaTeX? Overleaf is an online LaTeX editor. LaTeX is an open-source typesetting system. For more information on LaTeX, see our LaTeX page.

What can I use it for? Eligibility for the Overleaf Commons professional features through the University’s contract is based on primary affiliation. UTK graduate students, faculty and staff have access to the Overleaf Commons license which provides access to professional features including real-time track changes, unlimited collaborators, and full document history. Please note that once you have left the university, you will only have access to the free tier of Overleaf services. UTK undergraduate students have access to free features including one collaborator per project with unlimited projects. For more information, see Overleaf features.  

Enrolled students, faculty, and staff are permitted to use Overleaf for university-related instruction, noncommercial academic research, and administrative purposes.

Students, faculty, and staff are not permitted to use Overleaf for commercial research. Use that benefits outside organizations requires the purchase of a commercial license.

Where can I run it? Overleaf is a cloud-based service. To create a new account or log in to an existing account, use the login button for Overleaf on the left of this page.

How can I learn it? Overleaf provides helpful documentation and learning resources. Overleaf is a LaTeX editor. LaTeX resources may be additionally helpful such as the core documentation provided by the LaTeX Project.

License Use Definitions:

  • Instruction: teaching and learning activities
  • Noncommercial research: academic research; thesis or dissertation work; results are published
  • Commercial research:
    involves external deliverables; a trade secret of the sponsor; results are not published
  • Administrative:
    non-research, non-instruction uses related to the function of one’s university job (ex. generating departmental reports)
