AutoCAD and Other Products by Autodesk Inc.
What is it? AutoCAD is a Computer-Aided Design software application for 2D and 3D design and drafting. It is developed and sold by Autodesk Inc., along with related products like Inventor, Revit, Maya, 3ds Max Design, Fusion360, and ThinkerCAD. All available Autodesk products can be found here. What can the license be used for? Autodesk has announced that universities can use its software for educational license at no additional charge. Enrolled students, faculty, and staff are permitted to use AutoCAD and other Autodesk products for instructional and noncommercial research purposes.
Students, faculty, and staff are not permitted to use the Autodesk educational license for commercial research or administrative purposes. Use that benefits outside organizations requires the purchase of a commercial license. For additional details, see the following link.
Where can I run it? The AutoCAD and other Autodesk products are available to faculty, staff, and students at UTK, UTM, UTHSC, and UTC for installation on university-owned and personal-owned Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. The installation instructions are on the OIT software download site. For UTK, Autodesk products are also available on OIT’s Apps@UT server and the computers in the OIT public computer labs.
How can I learn it? The Autodesk Forums can be used to learn AutoCAD and ask questions from other AutoCAD users. Many additional educational resources for AutoCAD can be found using LinkedIn Learning.
Where can I get support? OIT offers Minimal Support for AutoCAD and other products from Autodesk to University of Tennessee, Knoxville-area students, faculty, and staff . For installation assistance, contact the OIT HelpDesk at 865-974-9900. You can also create a ticket or chat with an agent through the Autodesk Education site.
License Use Definitions:
- Instruction: teaching and learning activities
- Noncommercial research: academic research; thesis or dissertation work; results are published
- Commercial research:
involves external deliverables; a trade secret of the sponsor; results are not published - Administrative:
non-research, non-instruction uses related to the function of one’s university job (ex. generating departmental reports)
