Assistant HPSC Systems Analyst

Pay: $13/hour

Purpose

The High Performance & Scientific Computing (HPSC) group of the Office of Innovative Technologies (OIT) at The University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK) is seeking applicants for an Assistant HPC Systems Analyst position which will work with OIT HPSC in supporting, maintaining, securing, and operating the research cyberinfrastructure resources used to support the research mission of the University. OIT operates computing resources and provides support to University researchers and their collaborators giving them the capability to investigate and solve cutting-edge and computationally challenging problems.  Under the guidance of the Director, High Performance and Scientific Computing, this student will work with the HPSC team that manage and support the University’s high performance computing (HPC) and storage resources. The student will also work with faculty and researchers to make effective use of the resources for research.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

The successful applicant should have a good working knowledge of Linux, be able to perform systems analysis, and provide problem solving to support, maintain, and administer the research cyberinfrastructure resources used to support the research mission of the University.  The responsibilities of the Assistant Systems Analyst includes, but is not limited to: coordinating the support and maintenance of computing and storage resources, including hardware and software; supporting the System Administrators and Scientific Computing staff with supporting and maintaining the computational resources; supporting the maintaining an effective security posture including implementing the required security controls specified in the system security plan; diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving user issues; providing technical support and user support as needed; documenting resources, services, processes and procedures to support and use the resources; and working with other OIT groups, such as, Networking Services, Help Desk, and Systems to support the continued and efficient operation of the storage and computational and infrastructure resources.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or Graduate student in a scientific and/or engineering discipline
  • General knowledge and use of Linux
  • Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work independently and/or with a team
  • Prioritize individual assignments
  • Interest in learning and developing an in-depth knowledge of system administrator duties, issues, technologies, and best practices

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with file systems and/or storage set up with Linux
  • Experience with high performance computing and/or networking
  • Responsive to colleague and researcher inquiries while handling these requests with courtesy and professionalism is required
  • In-depth knowledge of script writing in Perl, Python, and/or bash
  • Knowledge/use of SLURM workload management systems
  • Experience/use of Microsoft productivity tools, such as, Teams, OneDrive, and Sharepoint
