Volweb for Academic Coursework

OIT provides virtual server space for active students to build websites for coursework. Sites hosted in this environment are available from the UTK campus network or through the VPN, but are not available to the public.

The Academic Coursework Linux Environment is a robust, full-stack LAMP service running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which includes:

  • Internal websites hosted on Volweb (http://volweb.utk.edu/)
  • 1 GB quota
  • Various programming languages
  • Apache
  • Access to a MySQL database service
  • Sign in with your NetID, password, and two-factor authentication

After creating an Academic Coursework Linux account, UT students can build websites, compile programs, edit files, and more. Your Academic Linux/VolWeb account will be deleted at the end of the academic term.

You should receive a Duo prompt when trying to connect to your Acadmic LAMP account using an SSH or SFTP client. In addition, volweb.utk.edu WordPress sites will require a manual update and upload process.

MySQL

MySQL is a popular open-source SQL database management system and is often used as a free back-end database for many web and open-source applications. If you plan to set up WordPress on your Academic Linux account, you must sign up for a MySQL database.
