University-Supported WordPress



The University-Supported WordPress environment is designed to allow departments to manage their web content while administrators from the Office of Innovative Technologies (OIT) and the Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM) maintain WordPress and installed plugins hosted at WP Engine.

Features of University-Supported WordPress

  • Maintain your web content without the extra hassle of updating WordPress.
  • Request activation of any plugin currently installed on the system (see below for more information about plugins).
  • Sites created using The Hill, the official Univerisity of Tennesee, Knoxville, theme.
  • Protect your site with two-factor authentication.
  • There is no additional cost for using the University-Supported WordPress environment.

Types of Sites

Remember: the university’s website is a platform for communicating with external stakeholders, such as prospective students, researchers, and faculty, about university activities, and any site within the utk.edu domain structure reflects the university.

OCM and OIT collaborate with the university community to determine the type of WordPress site that best suits your needs.

Multisites

  • Colleges, schools, and major administrative divisions
  • Academic Departments, Academic Support Units, Administrative Divisions, Administrative Support Units, Major Research Initiatives
  • URLs will be in the format of name.utk.edu

Standalone sites

  • Special events and conferences
  • Research labs, groups, and projects
  • URL will be in the format of name.sites.utk.edu or name.labs.utk.edu

WordPress Plugins

WordPress plugins provide additional functionality to WordPress websites. Several plugins are preinstalled with your site, and you may request any approved plugin currently installed be added to your site. If the current plugins do not meet your needs, OIT administrators will consider installing additional plugins.

WordPress Site Configurations

Sites hosted in the University-Supported WordPress environment will have the following configurations:

  • Quota: 1 GB for Media Uploads
  • Max Upload File Size: 2 MB

How to Request a Site

Complete the University-Supoprted WordPress request online. Include the site title and request your site’s first and second-choice URL options.

Request a consultation to migrate an existing site. Please include the URL, hosting service, and any plugins in use.
