There are four main ways to obtain software at UT: Internet downloads, OIT’s Terminal Server, Analysis.utk.edu, online departmental purchases and UC Computer store. All four methods require that you use the software only for internal academic or administrative purposes. If the software use benefits any outside organization, you need to purchase a regular license even if you do not charge that organization. A brief description of many of our software licenses and how we support them is at http://oit.utk.edu/scc/software.php.
The Commons
OIT's HelpDesk distributes a free CD containing McAfee AntiVirus, Adaware and Spybot at The Commons in 220 Hodges. Students, faculty and staff can stop by to pick up a copy. For hours of operation, see http://commons.utk.edu/.
Internet Downloads
UT faculty, staff and students can download software directly to their computers. Most of this software is centrally funded (free!) at the Knoxville campus. Availability at other campuses varies depending upon the cost sharing decisions each has made. Much of this software requires a couple of gigabytes of disk space and a fast internet connection. If you don’t have a fast internet connection, purchase the software you need on CD or DVD by following the Online Departmental Purchases information below or purchase a copy for personal use from the UC Computer Store http://bookstore.asa.utk.edu/uccs/index.html.
- Around 20 packages are available at https://web.dii.utk.edu/softwaredistribution/. Note that installation and activation instructions and codes are usually a separate download! SAS products are available in this area but you must purchase a license to activate them. Also, Clementine is available here but is only available for use on UT-owned machines, so you must order the activation code separately. The packages available there are (Windows only unless otherwise noted): Amos, AnswerTree, Clementine (UT machines only), Data Entry Builder, DecisionTime/WhatIf, DeltaGraph, Hummingbird Host Explorer, Insightful Miner, JMP (Windows & Power Macintosh), Maple (Windows & Power Macintosh), Neural Connection, Nolij, QDA Miner, SamplePower, SAS including Enterprise Guide, Enterprise Miner and Text Miner (all in one download), Simstat, S-PLUS, SPSS (Windows & Power Macintosh), SPSS Data Access Pack, SPSS Text Analysis for Surveys, Webdrive and WordStat.
- The Microsoft Outlook client for Exchange software download is at http://oit.utk.edu/exchange under Setup and Configuration.
- The antivirus software download is at http://antivirus.utk.edu.
Terminal Server: Analysis.utk.edu
Our Analysis.utk.edu system lets you run research software as if it were installed on your own computer. The software actually runs on a Terminal Server called Analysis.utk.edu, and displays an image of it on your computer. It is very easy to use since you can open and save files on your own computer’s disk drive and print to your own printer. You can use it from any Windows, Macintosh, Linux, or Solaris computer.
Students can log onto the server using their NetID and password. Students who have suppressed their information in the UT directory need to send email to StatHelp@utk.edu to gain access. Faculty and staff must purchase a client access license for a one-time fee that is listed in the Software Catalog below By Vendor under, “Analysis Software Server”. Cost is $16 ($22 at UTC).
Software available is: Amos, ATLAS.ti, Clementine, EQS, ImageJ, Insightful Miner, JMP, Maple, Mathematica, MATLAB, MestRec, Mplus, N6/NUD*IST, NVivo, Origin, QDA Miner, R, Sample Power, SAS, SAS Enterprise Guide, SAS Enterprise Miner, SAS Text Miner, Scientific Notebook, SigmaPlot, SigmaScan, Simstat, S-PLUS, SPSS, Stat Transfer, Stata and SUDAAN.
