Malwarebytes antivirus software is now available for both Windows and Macs. The new version of Malwarebytes is a centrally managed solution; you can kick off a Threat Scan by right-clicking on the Malwarebytes icon. When the scan is complete, Malwarebytes will display the results.
If the scan finds a threat, you do not need to contact the OIT HelpDesk. Malwarebytes will quarantine the threat(s) and may ask you to restart your computer. You may also see a notification that Malwarebytes is blocking a website for targeting ads, pop-ups, and malicious sites. If you think Malwarebytes has quarantined a program or blocked a website that you need for work, please call the OIT Helpdesk at 865-974-9900.
We occasionally hear from some people that they think that “Macs do not get viruses.” While this may have been the case at one time, it is no longer true. It is important that macOS devices have protection against the various forms of malware that do exist.
To install Malwarebytes on your university macOS devices:
- Go to the OIT Software Download site.
- Log in and select “I am installing this software on a UT-owned computer.”
- Go to the heading for Malwarebytes.
- Select the “MBAM for Mac” product appropriate for your entity (UTK, UTIA, UTSA). If you do not see your entity, use the UTK version.
- Review and follow the instructions provided.
On the evening of February 24, OIT will begin the process of rolling out a new version of Malwarebytes to Windows computers in Active Directory (AD).
The next time you log in to your computer from campus with your NetID and password, the Malwarebytes installation will begin automatically. If your computer is not in AD, we recommend that you contact the OIT HelpDesk to discuss your options for adding it. If this is not an option, log in to the OIT Software Download site to manually install Malwarebytes.
