Helping Students Stay Organized in Online@UT (Canvas)

As the semester progresses, it is common for students to feel overwhelmed and lose track of assignments, due dates, and other important tasks. The Canvas To-Do List is one tool you can use to help students develop time management and planning habits. Students can use the “To-Do” list to view upcoming deadlines across all courses and track graded or ungraded assignments.

Intentionally highlighting and modeling the use of the To-Do List reduces missed or late submissions. Reinforce the effective use of the To-Do List by:

  1. Being Intentional with Due Dates: Assign due dates to graded activities whenever possible.
    • Only include items with clearly defined due dates on the To-Do List.
    • Ensure dates align with what is stated in the syllabus and assignment instructions.
  2. Encouraging students to review their To-Do List regularly: This practice encourages proactive planning.
    • Post a brief announcement, reminding students where they can find the To-Do list by referencing it when discussing upcoming deadlines.
    • Remind students to click the small “x” next to an item to manually remove passed submissions.
