Got Java?

Are you tired of the constant upgrade notices from Java? We have some good news! The majority of UTK users, including Argos users and most Banner INB users, no longer need Java to do our work.

OIT recommends that you remove Java altogether from your computers*. Why? Oracle Java upgrades beyond v8.202 are no longer free for business/commercial use, which is what how we use Oracle Java at UT.

Because Java is still free for personal use, you will continue to be prompted to upgrade as long as Java is running on your computer. If you do upgrade beyond v8.202, you need to purchase a license for that upgrade to comply with their new licensing. The auto-update mechanism will ask you to confirm that you understand and accept the new license before updating.

*If you received explicit instructions that you still need Oracle Java, such as those who run the UC4 Banner job scheduler client or Banner Workflow modeler, please leave Oracle Java installed, but ignore all upgrade notices for anything beyond v8.202.

If you have any questions about Java, whether you need it, what version to run or how to remove it, please contact the OIT HelpDesk at 865-974-9900.
