Email Security: External Email

OIT will help you identify emails that originate outside the University by adding [EXTERNAL EMAIL] to the body of these messages.  While we continue to filter large amounts of spam, scams, and malware before they reach you, some of these fraudulent messages will slip through.

External Email is not “bad”, just external. [EXTERNAL EMAIL] in the message should serve as a reminder that you should not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe.

Phishing scams can come in many forms.  Review the tips for spotting a phishing scam on OIT’s website to learn more about how to spot a scam and how to report it when you receive one.
