Our scanner is an Scantron OpScan 8, Model 35, with a bar-code reader and score printer. Under ideal conditions, it is capable of scanning 3,500 double-sided forms per hour.
General-purpose answer sheets are standard forms that you can use to record the answers to tests or surveys. Several types of answer sheets are available at the UT Book and Supply Store. You can purchase forms in packs of 500 directly from Scantron at 800-722-6876 or online at ScantronStore.com.
We can save the data from your scan forms in an Excel file that most software packages can read. We also offer file conversion services that can translate the data into formats usable by almost any spreadsheet, database, or statistics package.
The cost of scanning is 6 cents per page. It is the same for single- and double-sided forms. This price includes an Excel file containing your data. For tests, we also provide item analysis in the form of a PDF file. Answer reports of each student's answers and the correct answers for each item, formerly an extra cost option, are now available at no charge.
You must pay using a departmental account. We cannot scan without this account number. Students who need to use the service must handle billing through their department.
Scantron forms should be dropped off and picked up at 517 Greve Hall. Forms may be dropped off or picked up between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Mon.-Fri. Forms should be picked up promptly after being processed. Processed forms left over two weeks from their drop-off date will be securely discarded.
Forms will be processed within one working day. Your Scantron results will be delivered to you via the secure Online@UT (Blackboard) interface. Once you receive your Scantron results in Blackboard your forms will be ready for pickup at Greve Hall.
On the last day of final exams we scan more frequently to give you more time to get your grades in.
If you have special needs such as scanning custom forms or scheduling quicker turnaround time, contact Mike O'Neil at 974-8333 a few days in advance to make the arrangements.
To score a test, you create an answer key by filling in the correct answers on a Scantron form. Please label the answer key with your name, the class number, the version number or letter if there are multiple versions of the exam, and the word "key" in the top margin of the Scantron form. The scanning software allows for only one correct answer per item. Filling in multiple response choices on the key will give all students credit no matter which response they choose. To have an item dropped from the scoring process, leave all response choices for that item blank on the key.
Place the appropriate key on the top of each set of tests you have to score. Each set of tests must have its own key on top, even if the same key might apply to different sets. If you have multiple sections taking the same version of an exam you can have your students enter their section number in the Special Code section of their forms. This will allow you to score them in a single batch and separate them afterwards.
The scanner will print the score on each form. We can also save the scores and the responses to each item in an Excel file as described above.
Item analysis can be particularly helpful in improving the quality of your tests. This analysis includes the number and percent of people who chose each answer as well as overall statistics such as mean score and test reliability. We provide item analysis with all test-scoring projects at no cost.
Scanned forms are ready to be picked up according to the chart above. Only persons listed on the scanning request form may pick up the completed Scantron forms.
