Microsoft 365 at UTK

Microsoft 365 is Microsoft’s cloud-based office suite, which includes online versions of popular Microsoft products like Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and new apps like Planner or Sway. Microsoft 365 allows for anytime, anywhere access to these apps through your browser or mobile device, making it a powerful and useful tool for online courses.

Examples of what you can do with Microsoft 365

  • Create and edit a Word document, PowerPoint presentation, Excel file, or OneNote Notebook from any browser or mobile device.
  • Sync your documents across multiple devices which gives you access to your course materials anywhere you are.
    • Tip: Using Microsoft 365’s mobile apps on your tablet or smartphone gives you the access you need without having to take your laptop with you. Mobile apps are available in your device’s app store.
  • Upload documents like course readings to folders in OneDrive and share with TAs and other instructors by managing share permissions.
  • Set up a class email list using Groups in Outlook if you would like to communicate and share documents with your students before the class starts or the Canvas course site becomes available.
  • Create Excel surveys for your class to collect information well ahead of your Canvas course site becoming available. These surveys will populate data into an Excel file for easy analysis.
    • Tip: Survey links can be copied and pasted into emails, Canvas pages, and Zoom chats.
  • Use Planner to delegate tasks to other instructors or TAs.
    • Tip: Planner is a new app in Microsoft 365. OIT offers training on Planner, which you can register for on OIT’s workshop page. You can also access LinkedIn Learning training for Planner here.

  • Create a Sway presentation as an alternative to PowerPoint lectures.  Sway is a new and visually dynamic  presentation tool that can be used instead of PowerPoint.
    • Tip: Sway presentations can be embedded in Canvas easily by selecting ‘Share’ in the top right-hand corner of the screen and selecting the Get Embed Code option. Just copy and paste into the text box of a new page in Canvas, and your Sway will be embedded.
  • Use OneNote to keep class notes.
  • Have students keep reflective journals using Class Notebooks.
    • Tip: In Class Notebooks, students can have their own journal pages that only you as the instructor can see. They can also collaborative in the Collaboration space. Canvas also gives you the opportunity to have a Class Notebook in your course site.
  • If you are using Canvas’ Calendar function to share assignment due dates, you (and your students) can sync that Calendar through the Calendar Feed option.  Just copy the link, select the Add Calendar option in Calendar in Microsoft 365, and then select the From the Internet option.  Then, paste your link and watch your calendars sync up!

  • Use Forms as a formative assessment at the beginning or end of class. By creating a form and sharing the link with students, you can easily collect responses that let you know what your students understood or had trouble with to let you modify your instruction.
  • Collaborate on papers and presentations in and outside of class.  Students can use Word Online or PowerPoint Online without being in same place at the same time.
    • Tip: If you are worried about proper attribution of work, have students write their sections in different font colors so you can see at a glance who did what.
  • You can create Groups (in People) that provide students with an alternative to Canvas’s Collaboration space. In Groups, students can send each other messages/emails. They have access to a private Notebook, Calendar, and OneDrive space, and can even create a Plan that allows them to break apart group projects and delegate tasks.
