Accessibility by Design Grant

Applications to participate in this opportunity must be submitted by close of business on Tuesday, May 25, 2021.

If you are interested in improving the accessibility of files you create, from Microsoft Word to Camtasia to Canvas, please consider participating in a grant initiative to pilot OIT’s Accessibility Evaluation Implementation Tools (AEIT) checklists and guides that have been developed to allow anyone to assess and improve the accessibility of various files. Depending on the type of file, your incentive for participation will change. File types included for evaluation in this grant are:

  • Canvas and WordPress ($300 per file, time estimate to complete: 4-5 hours)
  • Camtasia ($200 per file, time estimate to complete: 2-3 hours)
  • Microsoft Word PowerPoint and Excel ($100 each, time estimate to complete: 1-2 hours)

You can apply to evaluate one or multiple products using the corresponding AEIT checklist.

Process

Individuals interested in participating should please complete the application form. OIT staff will select participants equitably based on their time of submission, interest, and past experience with accessibility. For those selected…

  1. The Accessibility by Design Grant is available for faculty, staff, and graduate assistants at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
  2. Participants will submit a document, website, course pages, etc., based on the type of software they are evaluating.
  3. Participants will then use the corresponding AEIT resource to evaluate and revise the course or materials to address accessibility.
  4. Participants will submit the revised content to OIT.
  5. OIT staff will review your results and debrief you based on our evaluation of the final product’s accessibility.
  6. Participants will complete a post-survey re: user experience.
  7. Participants will engage in an additional focus group or individual interview re: user experience, not surpassing 30 minutes of their time.

Tier 1 – $300

Tier 1 involves intensive authoring tools (i.e., Canvas and WordPress), with many accessibility considerations. We anticipate this participation at this tier taking several hours to a full day to complete. Choose either Canvas or WordPress from the list below to see which elements need to be present to be eligible for your AEIT review.

Canvas

Create (or select from existing) 10 substantial and representative “items” (e.g., pages, assignments, quizzes) in a Canvas course. Represented somewhere across these items, the following should be present at least once (if you don’t have an instance of one or more of these items, you may add such an item the purpose of this project):

  • Video
  • Images
  • Headers
  • Lists
  • Tables
  • Links
  • Text and/or figures that use color meaningfully
  • Third party tool (e.g., Materia, Padlet, textbook/publisher tools)

WordPress

Create (or select from existing) 5+ substantial and representative pages in a WordPress-built and hosted website. Across these pages, the following should be present at least once (if you don’t have an instance of one or more of these items, you may add such an item the purpose of this project):

  • Video and/or audio content
  • Forms/Interaction
  • Images
  • Headers
  • Lists
  • Tables

  • Text and/or figures that use color meaningfully
  • Third party tool (e.g., forms, graphic carousels)

Tier 2 – $200

Tier 2 involves a semi-intensive authoring tool (i.e., Camtasia), with several accessibility considerations. We anticipate participation at this tier taking participants several hours to complete. Select Camtasia to see which elements need to be present to be eligible for your AEIT review.

Camtasia

Create (or select from existing) 1-2 Camtasia interactive media projects. Across these projects, the following should be present at least once (if you don’t have an instance of one or more of these items, you may add such an item the purpose of this project):

  • Video and/or audio content
  • Various interactions (e.g., hotspots)
  • Links
  • Images
  • Text and/or figures that use color meaningfully

Tier 3 – $100

Tier 3 involves limited-feature authoring tools (i.e., MS Office Products), with several accessibility considerations. We anticipate participation at this tier taking participants a few hours to complete. Choose Word, PowerPoint, or Excel from the list below to see examples of which elements need to be present to be eligible for your AEIT review.

Microsoft Word

Create (or select from existing) one or more Word documents. The selected document(s) should have the following elements at least once (if you don’t have an instance of one or more of these items, you may add such an item the purpose of this project):
