Before registering your computer, your computer must have the most recent updates and service packs installed. By installing these updates before you arrive on campus, your registration process will be faster. If you have any questions about how to run and install your updates, please contact the OIT HelpDesk at (865) 974-9900, Monday-Friday between 8am-5pm ET.
Open your wireless configuration tool. For some laptops the wireless configuration tool will be the built in to your operating system (Windows or Mac OS) and for others it will be the client that came with your wireless card.
Within your wireless configuration tool there will be a way to view available wireless networks. You should see a wireless network named "ut-open" in your list. When you connect to this network, your software might warn you that the network you are connecting to is not encrypted. This is expected since we do not use encryption on the open network and you should continue anyway.
After you have configured your connection, you must register your device to connect to UT's wireless network. Open your web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari for Macs, and go to http://netreg.utk.edu. Log in and follow the instructions to register.
Questions about Network Registration? Contact the OIT HelpDesk at (865) 974-9900 or online at help.utk.edu.
If you are new to the University, you may have been given your NetID as part of your orientation information. Before you can use the university network, you must look up your assigned NetID, log in, and set up your own password.
Go to https://directory.utk.edu and type in your full name in the search box in the upper right hand corner of the page. Select People Search. Your NetID will be displayed when you press go.
To set up your NetID password for the first time, go to https://ds.utk.edu/passwords/setup.asp and follow the instructions.
It will take 15-20 minutes for your new password to take effect.
Once you have set up your password, consider enabling the ONLINE PASSWORD RESET option.
Then if you forget your NetID password, you should be able to reset it by going to https://ds.utk.edu/passwords/login.asp and following the directions there.
If ONLINE PASSWORD RESET has not been enabled and you cannot remember your password, you will have to visit the OIT Service Center in Commons South on the second floor of Hodges Library for help resetting it.
For the most up-to-date information on email for faculty and staff, visit the Office 365 (Faculty and Staff) page.
To register for a UNIX account just follow these steps:
After you click Yes, it will then register you for an account. It will take about 2 hours for the account to be created.
As long as you have an active NetID and password, you can access Blackboard by clicking the "Login to Online@UT" button in the right column of http://online.utk.edu/. Course sites for the classes you will be teaching should appear automatically, either two months prior to the beginning of the semester, or when your department enters the information into Banner. Check the Course Access Calendar for semester course availability dates. If you are teaching multiple sections of the same class, or have a class that is cross-listed with other departments, you can submit a ticket at http://remedy.utk.edu/contact/ telling us which sections you would like combined. You can also request a custom course site by submitting a ticket. There are many reasons you might need a custom site, including developing content in advance of a section number being available, allowing students to explore the online teaching process, or preparing a site for tenure review purposes.
We strongly recommend that you take our Introduction to Online@UT workshop, either face-to-face or online. This introduction to our course management system will acquaint you with the system's main functions and features, including posting content, creating online assessments, tracking grades, transferring documents, and fostering effective electronic communication (e-mail, discussion boards, chats). If you are an experienced Blackboard user from another institution, this workshop is not necessary, but may still be useful.
Check our system requirements page for specific information on supported operating systems, browsers and additional software.
MyUTK is the new, one-stop-shop for UT Faculty, Staff, and Students. You will be able to sign in once and have access to many UTK resources including:
In addition to these resources, you will have a For Your Review summary of important announcements and links to other UT sites.
MyUTK is comprised of categorized blocks of links and information called Web Parts. For example, one Web Part, which has UT-related links, is labeled “UT Links.” Web Parts allow you to build the view of your UT tools and information. Look for instructions to add or close Web Parts to customize your MyUTK view in the Web Part labeled “How Do I...”
Go to the “UTK Faculty Links” Web Part of MyUTK and select the semester and class you want details for from the pull down menus. This is where faculty assign grades and view class details, class wait list, and final class grades.
Go to the “UTK Advisor Links” Web Part of MyUTK and select the semester and student you want to view information about. Then, click on the “View Advisee Profile.”
NOTE: If you are a graduate student or staff member who also has an advising role, you will need to add the “UTK Advisor” Web Part. Click for Instructions.
