This page addresses questions parents commonly ask as they prepare to send a student to UT Knoxville.
Your student will have access to ResNet, the university’s residence hall network, through the ethernet ports in their room. Wireless access is also available in the residence halls, as well as most academic and administrative buildings.
Your student will need a network capable computer which must be registered on the UT network. Additional information about registering your computer is available in the Registering your Computer to Use UT's Network section.
Students not living on campus will need access to the Internet via your own Internet service provider (Comcast, Time Warner, AT&T, etc.). Although your student will be using an ISP other than UT, they will still be able to access their UT e-mail account, class registration, Online@UT, and other university and be able to access the same services as students living on campus.
The answers to these questions depend on the student’s needs and major. Start by checking with the specific college or department to find out what kind of computer and software they recommend for their incoming students.
Each student receives an email account and NetID. That NetID, combined with @vols.utk.edu is the student’s email address. You can always look up students’ email addresses, in the online directory. Additional information about Volmail accounts is available in the Email Accounts section.
Yes, each student may create a webpage. The technology training team offers several student workshops on how to create a website. Additionally, there are links to many websites in the collegiate surfer site with tips on how to make a homepage, where to find clip art, icons, and backgrounds. These links can help students personalize their homepages. Additional information about these accounts is available in the Website Accounts section.
