Statistics About the RCS

  • Our clients come from over 100 departments from all colleges/schools.
  • Students are 82% of our clients. Faculty and staff staff are 18%.
  • We help our clients 5,000 times per year with short-term problems via walk-in support, phone calls or email totaling around 2,000 hours.
  • We assist with 350 long-term research projects per year.
  • Median support time needed on long-term research is 3 hours/year; the mean is 5 hours/year.
  • Statistical analysis is used by 55% of research projects at UT and by 85% of our clients.
  • We manage research software licenses and the web-based download site which provide 50 software packages to several thousand researchers each year.
  • We train 250 researchers per year in non-credit and for-credit classes on the topics: statistical or mathematical computing, data management, research design, statistical analysis, graphics, visualization, mapping and data mining.
  • Our web page documentation helps researchers choose, install and learn to use research software. It is viewed around 100,000 times per year and takes us around 100 hours per year to maintain.
  • We manage surveys.utk.edu, the web site that enables researchers to put their surveys or other data collection forms on the web. We currently host around 300 surveys a year at this site. This server collects thousands of responses at no cost to the researchers. 
  • We manage the analysis.utk.edu server, which makes over 30 research software packages available to all UT campuses.
  • We manage Optical Mark Reader (OMR) scanning of 280,000 forms each year. This includes grading tests and collecting data for the Campus Teaching Evaluation Program (CTEP). We also help our clients to create custom forms such as those used by CTEP. During Final's Week, we typically scan and score around 10,000 exams.
  • We provide 600 hours of assistance to internal ORIT research aimed at improving the organization's services.
  • Our staff consists of 6 full-time and two half-time consultants.
