General Information

  • Switchhook Operation
During conversations, many features can only be used by first depressing the switchhook or Flash. To do this, depress the switchhook or Flash quickly, then release it within a half second.

Caution: If you hold the switchhook down too long, your call will be disconnected.

  • Special Tones
Various tones and ringing patterns may be used to help you use your features properly:

  • Reorder Tone: A fast busy signal.
It is heard when you use an incorrect procedure to activate, deactivate, or program a feature. Refer to the correct procedure and try again.

  • Distinctive Dial Tone: a high-pitched tone.
It may be used to remind you that a feature you have activated is still in operation.

  • Distinctive Ringing: Two short rings.
    • It informs you that a call is ringing from off-campus.
    • Normal ringing is used for calls from on-campus.

  • Distinctive Call Waiting Tone: Two short beeps heard while the line is in use.
    • It informs you that a call from off-campus is waiting to be answered.
    • A normal Call Waiting tone (one beep) is used for calls coming from on-campus.

  • Considerations
    • Features may not be compatible between different telecommunications systems or service providers. If you attempt to use a feature with a number outside of the area served, you will hear an announcement telling you that the service cannot be used with that particular number.
    • Some of the features require you to press the *. If you have a rotary dial phone set, dial 11 instead of the *. This only applies to the first * in the dialing sequence for a service.
    • Some of the features require you to program lists of phone numbers. You must set up these lists prior to using the services. Please refer to the instructions in this guide to program the lists.

For many of the features, voice instructions will guide you through the various procedures and simplify their operations.
