 800 MHz Trunked Radios

The University of Tennessee has an agreement with Knox County Emergency Communication District (KCECD) to purchase space on the KCECD trunked radio system. Each department accesses its own "talk groups" and shares access to two campus "operations" talk groups for interdepartmental radio communications. Telephone Services is responsible for processing departmental requests and coordinating programming and maintenance of radios. Approximately 400 units are deployed on campus. The following departments on the Knoxville Campus are equipped with mobile and portable units:
  • Athletic Department
  • Parking Control
  • Physical Plant
  • UT Police Department

These 800 MHz radios are served by the same "fixed end" control and transmission equipment serving local agencies, including:

  • The Knoxville Fire Department
  • The Knoxville Police Department
  • The Knox County Sheriff's Department
  • Knox Area Transit (KAT)

Each department accesses its own "talk groups" and shares access to two campus "operations" talk groups for inter-departmental radio communications. When necessary, radios can be "dynamically regrouped" to allow joint response.

 Authorization and Account Codes

We offer a forced authorization code feature for access to long distance service or other special circuits. We also offer call detail recording (CDR) account codes. The CDR feature automatically monitors the time, date, and duration of each call, as well as the number called. For more information about the codes, please contact Telephone Services at 974-3121 or send an e-mail to teleservacct@utk.edu.

 Calling Cards

Telephone Services offers calling cards for faculty and staff. For more information about the cards, please contact Telephone Services at 974-3121 or send an e-mail to teleservacct@utk.edu.

 Conference Calling

Telephone Services provides conferencing capabilities for the Knoxville campus. The new system will allow up to 50 simultaneous users, attendee announcements, roll call, private meeting ID, and electronic confirmation with dial-in access. To schedule a university conference call you may use one of the following methods:
  1. Departments may schedule audio conferencing on the Web. The system requires a password to gain access for scheduling. To obtain an individual user ID and password, e-mail your request to telephoneservices@utk.edu. This request should include your name, department, UT e-mail address, phone number, and responsible account number to bill.

  2. Submit a Conference Call request form at least one business day prior to the requested conference time. To obtain a Conference Call request form click here. Fax or Print, complete, and mail request form to:

      Telephone Services
      8 Humanities Building
      Fax: (865) 974-8546

Once our office receives the information sheet, we will set up your conference call. An automatic e-mail will confirm that your conference call has been scheduled and provide you with the local/toll-free access numbers and the conference ID (meeting ID).

The cost for a conference call is $0.25 per minute per attendee.

 PhoneMail

PhoneMail is offered to both faculty/staff and students. PhoneMail eliminates the need for answering machines and allows callers to leave messages, even if your phone is busy, and allows you to check your messages from anywhere, on or off campus. Click here for a guide to using PhoneMail.

 Special Applications

Telephone Services provides special applications, such as:
  • Automated Call Distributor
This is a feature that permits a high volume of incoming calls to be distributed efficiently among a group of agents. Automatic Call Distribution queues calls and distributes them as agents become available.

  • Call Processing
It is an application that permits the system to answer and route incoming calls to a department. Callers hear pertinent information or a recorded menu of choice, then by pressing a single key, have their call transferred to the correct destination.

  • Circuits
Circuits are physical paths of channels, conductors, and equipment between two given points through which an electric current may be established. They include both sending and receiving capabilities.

Special circuits currently being provided by Telephone Services are:

    • Point of sale
    • Alarm
    • Data
    • VolCard circuits

 Special Event Service

Telephone Services coordinates with and provides telecommunications products and services for concerts, conferences, and athletic events. We provide a variety of circuits (ringdown, audio, and point-to-point) for network television coverage. In working with Student Affairs, Telephone Services seeks to fulfill student requests regarding campus safety. We assist in research by providing departments with equipment that could be utilized in their research projects.
