Access to the Internet at UT
New Students Getting Started
All UT students living in residence halls have individual Ethernet connections—UT’s Internet connection system known as ResNet. (For more information see Getting Connected to UT.) You are given free of charge an Ethernet cable with which you connect your computer to the box on the wall in your residence hall room. The first step for gaining access to the UT computer network is to register your computer. Open your Web browser and you are automatically taken directly to security.utk.edu, where UT’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) installs such software as anti-virus and security updates. Then a registration dialog box appears in which you will follow the prompts and type in the necessary information.
