NETID AND PASSWORD

Jump to: Your NetID | Your Password

Before you can start surfing the web to find all the great computing resources and training classes offered at UT, you need to get your Network ID and your password

Your Network ID

Once you are admitted to the University of Tennessee, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) assigns you a Network ID (NetID). This is your individual electronic identity – a unique profile that identifies you on the university’s network and allows you to use e-mail and many other online resources. You can register for classes, access your grades, use any OIT lab computer, use library services, access Blackboard, interact with parking services and use many other features specific to the university. Your NetID is part of your official record at UT.

Look Up Your Network ID and Set Up Your Password

Before you can use the university network, you must look up your assigned NetID, log in, and set up your own password.

Do this now! You will have the opportunity to register for classes during your first advising session, but you must have a valid password to do so.
Avoid delays in registering for classes – Do this now!

Go to https://directory.utk.edu and type in your full name. Your NetID will appear in the upper right hand corner.

Remember your NetID. You will use it frequently during your time at UT.

To set up your NetID password for the first time, go to https://ds.utk.edu/passwords/setup.asp and follow the instructions.

It will take 15-20 minutes for your new password to take effect. Taking care of this now will allow you to spend your advising session registering for your classes.

YOUR PASSWORD

YOUR NETID PASSWORD

It’s very secure – Read this before you create your password and you will save some time!

Put some thought into how you want to formulate your password before you create or change it. You will be required to change your password every 180 days. Passwords must have a minimum of eight characters and must contain a mixture of at least three out of the four following elements:

  • uppercase letter
  • lowercase letters
  • numbers
  • punctuation or special characters (such as “!” or “$”).

Avoid dates, social security numbers, phone numbers, birthdays, and names of family members—anything that might be relatively easy for someone else to guess. You might want to use an acronym for a phrase or jingle. While this will make the password easier for you to remember, the result is a seemingly random string of characters. Here are some examples of phrase-based passwords:

  • P!dhoTUW = PLEASE! don’t hang out THE UPPER WINDOWS
  • dwydICT! = drop what you’re doing: ICE CREAM TRUCK!
  • SSPmbe2r = SLIGHTLY SILLY PHRASES may be easier 2 remember.

FORGOT YOUR PASSWORD?

Once you have set up your password, consider enabling the ONLINE PASSWORD RESET option.

Then if you forget your NetID password, you should be able to reset it by going to https://ds.utk.edu/passwords/login.asp and following the directions there.

If ONLINE PASSWORD RESET has not been enabled and you cannot remember your password, you will have to visit the OIT Service Center in Commons South on the second floor of Hodges Library for help resetting it.
