Operating System Support

We will reinstall and upgrade the following supported operating systems: Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OS 10.2 and above. To take advantage of the service, here are the things you need to know.

OS Installation Guidelines

  1. The customer must supply either the original "factory pressed" CD and/or the restore CD. A printed license is also required.
  2. The computer must meet the minimum requirements of the operating system.
  3. The computer hardware has to be in good working condition meaning all hardware components should be functioning.
  4. The customer must sit down with OIT personnel when dropping off their computer so that we can verify the computer is in good working condition and meets the minimum installation requirements of the operating system.
  5. The customer must provide us with a list of items that need to be backed up, all of the software that needs to be reinstalled, and any physical devices (i.e. printers, scanners, fax machines, etc.) that need to be reinstalled.  Again, the customer must supply all the software and the appropriate licenses. Once the check-in process is complete, the customer must leave their computer in our possession.
  6. If the software requires certain terms and conditions to be accepted by the user, than the customer must sign our Software Installation Form agreeing to the terms and conditions of the software package(s) installed.
  7. We will do a full installation of the OS and automatically install all of the patches.
  8. We will work on dual booting machines as long as both operating systems are on our supported list.
  9. We will not load any virtualization software.
  10. We cannot reload operating systems in a foreign language.
  11. After the operating system is installed, the customer will be required to sit down with OIT personnel and verify that the operating system has been installed and is functioning and that their computer is in good working order. The customer will also be required to verify that their files have been restored and the requested software has been reloaded.

Virus Support

Viruses and other security issues have become an unwelcome part of computing life. We have seen an increasing number of machines compromised or hit with a virus increase this past year. To this end, we will begin cleaning viruses found on your computer and secure your computer if it becomes compromised. This is a best effort service and may require that we reload your operating system and start from scratch. To take advantage of the service, here are the things you need to know.

  1. The customer must participate in a consultation session with OIT personnel so that we can try to determine the nature of virus/worm/compromise.
  2. The computer has to be in good working physical condition, meaning all hardware components should be functioning.
  3. Once an initial diagnosis is made, the customer must leave their computer in our possession so that we can work on it.
  4. According to the recommendation of the Information Security Office, if the machine has been compromised, then we should reload the operating system (see the policies listed above for operating systems)
  5. If the machine has a virus, then the customer will need to leave it with OIT so that we can perform an in-depth assessment. After the assessment, we will inform the customer of our course of action, which could include either reloading the operating system or using a clean tool to disinfect the virus.
  6. When disinfecting a virus, we will install the University's free anti-virus package (if the customer does not already have one installed on the machine), install all security patches, and make a best effort to remove any traces of spyware.
  7. After the work is complete, the customer will be required to have a final consultation with OIT personnel to go over what was done and verify that the computer is in good working condition upon leaving the OIT Service Center.
