Glossary
antispyware
Antispyware software is used to remove spyware programs.
antivirus
Antivirus software is required on all systems connected to the UT network per UT policy (http://tennessee.edu/policy). OIT provides free antivirus software to all UT members (http://antivirus.utk.edu).
Barracuda
A Barracuda Spam Firewall is a dedicated firewall computer. Every email passed through the Barracuda is analyzed and either allowed through unchanged, tagged as possible spam, quarantined, or blocked. UT has multiple Barracuda systems, clustered for increased performance and fault tolerance, that process all email between on and off-campus, both inbound and outbound.
Commons
The Commons (http://commons.utk.edu/) is on the second floor of Hodges Library where you'll find most of the most frequently used library and technology resources in one location.
ERA
ERA stands for Enhanced Remote Access, which is the dial-up service available to UT members without high-speed connections.
Exchange
Microsoft Exchange is the name of the new email, calendaring, and groupware system at UT. UT's implementation has been branded "Tmail".
HelpDesk
The OIT HelpDesk (http://oit.utk.edu/helpdesk/) serves as a centralized source of information and service for the computer and network resources managed by OIT.
IMAP
IMAP is a protocol that email clients (like Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) use to access email.
LDAP
LDAP stands for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. UT Directory Services is implemented using LDAP technology. Your NetID is your unique entry into the Directory Services LDAP directory.
Listserv
LISTSERV® is a system that makes it possible to create, manage and control electronic "mailing lists" on the UTK network or on the Internet.
MAC address
A MAC address (media access control) is a unique identifier 12 characters long assigned to all networkable devices at the time of manufacture.
MAPI
MAPI is the email protocol used by clients like Outlook, Entourage, and Evolution to access Exchange email systems such as our Tmail system.
NetID
NetID is what comes before the "@" symbol in your email address.
Nomad
Nomad is the name of the UT Knoxville wireless network.
P2P
Peer-to-peer is a network file sharing model that can be used for both legitimate and illegal activities. See http://oit.utk.edu/copyright/ for more info.
POP
POP is a protocol that email clients (like Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) use to retreive messages. POP is not supported by the new Tmail system.
Service Center
The OIT Computer Support Service Center is located in the Commons at Hodges Library.
SFTP
SFTP is a secure file transfer protocol. SFTP is the preferred way to send and receive files to and from your Unix account.
SIMS
The SIMS email system is scheduled to be replaced by Tmail/Exchange (http://tmail.utk.edu, http://oit.utk.edu/exchange).
SMTP
SMTP stands for "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol." SMTP is the standard way most email is transferred. SMTP is a "push" protocol, which means that the sending computer pushes the email to the receiving computer. For computers that wish to "pull" email, such as a user checking his/her email from a personal computer, other protocols must be used, such as POP, IMAP, or MAPI.
Spam
Spam is unsolicited email usually from someone with whom you have no association.
spyware
Spyware is a type of program that monitors your computer activities without your knowledge.
SSH
SSH is a secure communication protocol. SSH is the preferred way to access your OIT Unix account.
Tmail
Tmail is the new, consolidated UT email system (http://oit.utk.edu/exchange).
Unix
Unix is an operating system. OIT offers Unix accounts to UT members for storage , web space, and educational purposes.
virus
A virus is a malicious computer program.
